5 Records To Put On With Your Morning Coffee Shared By Sixth Avenue

Sixth Avenue are a punk band from Perth.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Located in the northern suburbs of Perth, Joel, Kenji, Sam and Daniel make up punk four-piece Sixth Avenue.

Likened to acts such as Slowly Slowly and Sly Withers, Sixth Avenue are part-indie, part-emo, a mix that has hit a nerve as audiences fall for their frenetic live show.

Since releasing their debut EP 'So Temperamental', the boys have kept busy playing shows consistently in and around Perth supporting the likes of Pot Plant House Party, Late 90s and Scream Mountain, as well as knocking off headline shows of their own at the Indian Ocean Hotel, Amplifier Bar and Rosemount Hotel.

In May, the lads played an opening spot at the annual festival Sidefest, a three-day event put on by manager and promoter Simon 'Skinny' O'Leary (Sly Withers, Old Mervs).

Following the release of their tracks 'Lost' and 'Sometimes I Get High And Think About You' (that will both feature on their sophomore EP), their current single is titled 'Bleach'.

Here, Joel and Kenji share 5 records to play as you're enjoying your morning coffee.

Jimi Hendrix - 'Band Of Gypsys'

One of the first records I ever owned – nobody does a live album quite like Hendrix. We find it absolutely bonkers knowing that him and the band would never play the same set twice, and this one must have been the cream of the crop. The greatest to ever do it, super inspiring when pouring that morning brew.

Brand New - 'The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me'

The record that brings out the emo boys within us all – Brand New at their very best. This record is the source of countless jams in the rehearsal room when nothing else is flowing, and is the most exhilarating soundtrack to a sunrise caffeine hit.

Our producer, Jordy, who just so happens to have the record's cover art tattooed on his forearm, introduced us to this record and we are forever indebted. 'Jesus Christ' is undeniably our go-to on the track-list; if you know you know.

Radiohead - 'The Bends'

For those rainy and introspective mornings when it's especially hard to get moving, Radiohead's second album 'The Bends' is the ultimate record to dive into. To be honest, anything in Radiohead's discography would fit the spot on this list but we believe this one ever-so-slightly takes the cake.

This masterpiece of an album contains a whole track-list of melancholic anthems, perfectly fit for that morning depresso espresso – we recommend starting with 'Fake Plastic Trees'.

Turnover - 'Peripheral Vision'

A record that still feels fresh almost a decade later, and made Turnover one of our favourite bands of all time. This album seems to speak to you at almost any emotion, like a close friend. The band we continue to rip off the most, and the record we'll always be spinning while having that daily grind.

Ceres - 'We Are A Team'

We had to throw an Aussie act on the list, and nobody represents Down Under better than Melb's emo four-piece Ceres. This record was a huge turning point in our songwriting careers, the perfect album in many respects.

I always make sure to listen to 'Collarbone, 2011' every single day to keep me on the ground. The most heartening record in which every song hits, and is a perfect pair to your a.m. latté.
