5 Reasons Why Ipswich Slaps According To Damien Johnson

Damien Johnson's debut album is titled 'Girl'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Damien Johnson is an alt-electro-rock musician from Ipswich.

His new record, 'Girl', is his second full-length album and features four previously released singles: 'Crowd In My Hand', 'Enemy', 'Power' and 'Your Woman'.

Ahead of his album launch show, Damien shares a few reasons why Ispwich slaps.

1: The alternative music scene is rockin' with emerging artists like ACEKAYS, Paulina and a dude by the name of Syph Dene (who has to be seen to be believed) all adding to it in incredible ways.

2: Banshees Bar & Artspace. It's great to have an inclusive venue in town with a strong 'regular crowd' who treat each other like family and welcome alternative, fringe-dwelling people, like myself, in with open arms (plus the artwork on the wall always raises eyebrows).

3: The architecture is gorgeous (not including Springfield, but I'll leave that alone). The historic buildings and plethora of workers cottages around the older parts of town are simply enchanting.

4: Amazing food and drink. Ipswich hosts a bar with 70-plus craft beers on tap, a brewery, coffee roasters and Queensland's best gourmet ice-creamery – in my opinion.

5: The new Nicholas St precinct is promising to deliver a very viby cultural and hospitality district, plus it has an epic library (which is never crowded because Ipswichers can't read... kidding...).

Damien Johnson launches his new album 'Girl' at Lefty's Music Hall (Brisbane) 13 May.
