5 Quotes That Have Influenced SOLCHLD's Life

SOLCHLD is a multidisciplinary artist currently living in Meanjin.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

SOLCHLD invites you into her garden of truth, with her new work 'Growing Back' – a night of powerful poetic prose and honest soulful tunes that speak to love, revolution and healing.

SOLCHLD (Aurora Liddle-Christie) is a Meanjin-based Arrernte-Afro-Caribbean multidisciplinary artist, whose music, poetry and performance navigates themes such as decolonisation, generational healing and love.

Accompanied by her band, 'Growing Back' is a heartening and cathartic performance where ancient wisdom meets playful fantasy and vulnerability meets hard truths.

"Have you walked through the valley of the shadow of death? Tasted the last drop of hope on your thirsting tongue? Gone toe to toe with love only to be knocked out in the last round," questions SOLCHLD.

"Has your body, country, people been the chessboard for colonial controllers? Have you clawed your way back from the dust? From blackened ground? Sprouting forth with reverence? Re-writing your narrative in the colours of spring?

"Then come to my show! This performance is a culmination of my poetry and music that articulates this experience of growing back after events that blaze through your life like a wildfire. Leaving you only one option. To RISE! I'm beyond excited to hold space with you."

Ahead of her 'Growing Back' performance at BEMAC (in Brisbane) on 28 October, here SOLCHLD shares five quotes that have influenced her own life.

Water of a duck's back

This is my mum's mantra. Duck feathers are highly waterproof, they can submerge in water, resurface and the water just rolls right off them. My mum gave me this gift of letting go. Letting go of the things life or other people threw my way without resistance.

It's all bullsh.t my friend

Seventeen years old in a taxi on the way to Sydney airport, I was gifted this advice. The sentiment of the taxi man's statement was 'fake it till you make it'. It's all bullsh.t anyway, so just go for it.

No weapon formed against me shall prosper

My partner gifted me this gem. These words are fire in my belly and they have pulled me out of the deepest trenches. It's giving renaissance 'you won't break my soul!'.

You can always come home to yourself

We do some strange things out of fear of rejection and abandonment. This has been my love letter to self. A reminder to ground in my own sanctuary. I need not abandon myself for the acceptance of others and, no matter how far I stray, I can always come home to myself.

YOLO

As hard as it is for me to say this, Drake is right. 'You only live once', embedded in this generation's vernacular. It has made me say yes to experiences I otherwise wouldn't have had, good and bad. But, at the end of the day, it's all learning and can say 'I lived baby!'.
