5 Pre-Gig Rituals

Sunshine Coast musicians Pete Allan and Chris Flaskas have combined forces for the 'Ocean 2 Earth' tour.

With new releases to each peddle, this will be the second time Pete and Chris have shared the road together.

You can catch their coastal funk and earth rock musings in early June.

Before they pack their kit bags, Chris and Pete share some of their pre-gig rituals.

1. The Epic Vocal Warm-Up

[Chris & Pete] We both have the same vocal coach, who gives us little, recorded routines and breathing exercises to help us warm-up before the show. I remember we were stopped at the lights before a show and both doing trills and other interesting noises with the windows down.

I looked to the left to see an elderly couple in the car next to us just staring at us trying to work it all out. But seriously, it's the most important pre-gig ritual.

2. The Pre-Gig Feed

[Chris] Look, hands down I'm a big foodie haha. I find that a solid feed before I play grounds me out and sustains my body for a lengthy gig. It's a fine balance though with choice of foods, so that it doesn't repeat on me in a show; that can get awkward ha.

3. The Big Stretch

[Pete] A few years ago I had a bad back injury; during recovery I really discovered how much our muscles and flexibility can influence the rest of our body. So I do a long stretch before gigs to get my body ready for throwing everything into my performance.

4. Getting In The Right Mindset

[Chris] I'm all about preparing myself mentally, as I believe that my mindset entering and exiting a gig is important. I always begin with mentally letting go of my busy day and accepting all that has passed and came to be. I then set my intentions for how I wish to perform and visualise a great connection with playing and the audience throughout the show. I take a few conscious breaths and voila, I'm ready to play.

5. Social Media

[Pete] I don't 'love' social media, but I love that people can connect though it. Keeping supporters up to date on what I'm doing is important. Someone has chosen to devote their precious time to joining your journey, so a quick update is a great way to let them feel included and valued for that.
