5 Places To Hang & Make Music In Sydney With Ella Haber

Ella Haber releases her EP 'Clay' at the end of April.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Sydney-based soul artist Ella Haber will release her forthcoming EP 'Clay' later this month.

“'Clay' is an uncovering of the intoxicating vortex that comes in love’s aftermath,” Ella says, describing the EP's title single, “speaking truth to a desperate hope that battles with the paralysis of sexual manipulation and lingering validation.

“I wrote 'Clay' for anyone who is losing themselves in their lost loves; in solidarity with the insufferable sting, and in hope to remind you of your power to stand tall in your brilliance.”

Here, Ella shares some places in Sydney she enjoys hanging with friends and making music.

Campo Park at Sundown

An absolute chart-topper for my best mates and I: Campo Park (Camperdown Memorial Rest Park, Camperdown side).

It has all the qualities to push it to number one: hundreds of dogs, music everywhere, people drinking and hanging, easy access to the Courty, a beautifully creepy cemetery to explore, and a quick walk to King St for a dance or a feed.

Coogee Women’s Baths and Dog Park

These two heart-melt places are a few minutes walk from each other, so I’d include them in one fun day of all the best things: femme-people, ocean and dogs.

The Women’s Baths is one of the only women-only swimming spaces in the country, so it has a unique warmth of both safety and celebration, plus aaaalll the best nipples and shared sunscreen.

A few minutes through the park and you’ll find yourself at the Dog Park – a wide open, green space with the big, blue ocean behind it.

Looks Lane (AKA Lookes Avenue)

Cruising down to the harbour on the East side of Balmain, you will find a cul-de-sac that extends to the water’s edge, fondly called Looks Lane (but actually Lookes Avenue on the map).

It’s a quiet spot with a grassy area to play guitar, looking right onto the Harbour Bridge, Opera House and the skyscrapers on the North Shore.

Sab’s Van

My best mate Sab lives in a gorgeous, cosy, fairy-lit van, and opens her back door to a beautiful grassy-green park.

After a long night out, we’ll often wander home to her teeny tiny house, get cosy in her little bed, and dangle our feet onto the grass making up songs about how we feel and what we see. This may not be a public space per se, but if you ever stop by, we’ll make sure there’s space for all three of us.

Coogee Cliffs

Apart from being one of the most naturally beautiful spots in the city, this is where I grew up. Sheer rocky headlands with blooming shrubbery, and a breathtaking view of Gordon’s Bay on the left, Coogee Beach on the right, and the Big Blue straight ahead.

If you explore hard enough, there’s a little cave with a pink ceiling hole that me and my best mates hang and write music in. And of course, the sun rises in the East :)

'Clay' is released 26 April.
