Dutch indietronica artist Goldkimono returns with 'Melancholy Rain', a dusty, hazy-filled, nostalgic ride through surreal pop tones and trippy electronic landscapes of broken-beat lushness that hearts Beck meets The Shins and wrapped in a cloak of Moby.
Produced by Christian 'Crada' Kalla (Drake, Kid Cudi, Kendrick Lamar), 'Melancholy Rain' was inspired by childhood road-trips and films such as 'Little Miss Sunshine'.
"'Melancholy Rain' was written and recorded in a barn in East Germany with some of my best friends," shares Goldkimono.
"It's a bit of a cruiser and we felt like it had that '90s pop melancholy feel (road trip, 'Little Miss Sunshine') because of the guitars and the harmonies.
"'Melancholy Rain' describes those moments when it just feels good to daydream about memories, even if they are bittersweet.
"It takes you back to those childhood [moments] living carefree and living in the moment. It's about the moment that reminds us of who we once were."
After releasing his debut single in 2020, last year Goldkimono shared his debut album 'The Legend Of The Goldkimono'.
Here, Goldkimono shares five albums that fill him with nostalgia.
1: 'Parachutes' - Coldplay
This was the soundtrack to my first real travels by myself after high school. Travelled to Asia and Australia, and America. Whenever I listen to this album now it brings back all the memories.
2: 'The Score' - Fugees
Listened to this album religiously during my teenage years. It was one of the first hip hop albums I owned and I would sit in the attic of my mum's house listening and trying to rap along to the songs.
3: 'Garden State' soundtrack
Legend of a soundtrack put together by Zach Braff. After having watched the movie (which I loved) the soundtrack really stuck with me. It started to become my go-to vibe to put on in the background or during travels.
4: 'Exodus' - Bob Marley
I had one friend whose father introduced us to reggae. He put us on to the 'Exodus' album, and the first song 'Natural Mystic' had such an epic intro because of the slow build/ fade in of the groove. Became our soundtrack for that summer.
5: 'Greatest Hits' - Queen
When I was about ten years old, I had a cousin that was a lot older than me and he sat me down and said, 'listen to this kid'. And put on the Queen 'Greatest Hits' album. From the first notes I was just captivated. I learned all those songs on piano after that. Been a fan ever since.
