5 Must-See Acts At The 2016 Brisbane International Jazz Festival

Marcus Strickland
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A living legend of the Australian jazz landscape (with a 30-year-plus association directing, producing, presenting, promoting and touring local, national, international jazz and contemporary music artists and ensembles within Australia and abroad) Lyn Irwin is also the Artistic Director at the Brisbane International Jazz Festival, which runs 2-12 June.

We asked Lyn to pick her top 5 must-see acts at this year's event.

1. Marcus Strickland’s Twi-Life

Definitely a must-hear premiere event. With Strickland’s ability to incorporate hip hop beatmaking, superb saxophone playing plus utilise dynamics and harmonic textures tastefully, the stage is set to witness a master composer and performer weaving sound magic. I envisage a stunning array of eclectic sounds performed by the world-class line-up of adventurous souls featured in Twi-Life and on Strickland’s Blue Note release 'Nihil Novi'. Thursday 9 June at BEMAC.

2. Mulatu Astatke with Black Jesus Experience

A rare opportunity to witness the creator of Ethio-jazz Mulatu Astatke with Melbourne’s nine-piece Black Jesus Experience. The gig features 'The Cradle Of Humanity', a meditation on the evolution of humanity and music. I'm looking forward to a spiritual journey of heartfelt and joyous sounds that promises to be an uplifting encounter. Saturday 4 June at BEMAC.

3. Quentin Angus

Double Downbeat magazine winner and guitar wizard Quentin Angus is celebrated as much in his native Australia as he is in his New York digs. His trio features the crème de la crème of jazz improvisers: drummer Ari Heonig (USA) and Aussie bassist Sam Anning. Be prepared for a sonic journey of stunning compositions and inspiring solos. Monday 6 June @ JMI Live.

4. Catherine Lambert

Remember the flaming redhead singer in 'Lost In Translations'? Yep, this is her. Witty, naughty and full of swing Ms Lambert is a master of crooning the sultry, jazz ballad with lavish charisma. Catherine’s a gracious and engaging performer who delivers whether performing her originals or unique renditions of jazz classics. This’ll be a fun gig. Friday 10 June at the Brisbane Jazz Club.

5. MWIJF Quintet

Five acclaimed Australian jazz instrumentalists perform their Brisbane premiere of original compositions written exclusively by each member for this specific ensemble. These women are exceptional jazz artists who are totally committed to their art form. Sydney saxophonist Sandy Evans is renowned nationally and internationally for her compelling compositions and dexterity over her preferred horn the tenor.

Together with her Sydney sister in jazz, the impeccable bassist Hannah James plus Melbourne’s talented, multi-award winning ARIA artist and composer pianist Andrea Keller, alto saxophonist Angela Davis and drummer Sonja Horbelt, this will be a stunning finish to performances at the QLD Multicultural Centre. A dream band of Australian female jazz talent. Saturday 11 June at BEMAC.

The Brisbane International Jazz Festival takes place 2-12 June at various locations.
