5 Moments Of Advertising Genius Created By The Music Choice Shared By Drawing Arrows

Drawing Arrows are a Sydney-based rock band.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Drawing Arrows are rock band intent on honouring all aspects of the rock & roll canon, from Aussie rock, to US grunge, and flamenco guitar to Britpop rock and amped-up punk.

With members from Spain, the UK and Australia, Drawing Arrows aim 'to create music that feels good to play and to listen too'.

The Sydney-based band recently released a their second EP, a three-track set titled 'Pinch Me'.

The self-titled track has been a work-in-progress since the boys first started playing together. Despite the fact it's changed format a number of times, it remained a favourite of Sidney Espinosa's (vocalist). With its soulful lyrics and cool groove you can understand why.

'Lights Out' provides a little light chaos and fits in well with the energy you'd see in their live shows. The driving bass and drums keep the crowd going as the post-punk guitars keep them inspired.

Then 'Good Grief' explores the ideas of dealing with things that you just can't change. Instead of a melancholic ballad, this track hits all the big notes.

Sidney and the band's bassist/ guitarist David Johns have supplied a listicle detailing their favourite classic TV ads that were enhanced by a banger tune to create a classic advertising moment.

"The music choice for anything can make or break it," begins Sidney and David. "If it's action film scenes or raucous house parties, you've gotta get it right.

"Here are five moments when we feel that the choice of song was more than simply a soundtrack – it MADE the TV commercial that it featured in."

5: Levi Jeans - Mr Oizo 'Flat Beat'

In the '90s, Levi Jeans used classic songs in their commercials. It went so well songs that had been released decades earlier were hitting the Top 10 again.

Then out of nowhere they used a French minimal house track and created one of the most memorable moments with a puppet since 'Muppets Take Manhattan'.

4: Bravia/ Sony TV - Jose Gonzalez 'Heartbeats'

This acoustic cover of an electro track by The Knife set to a million coloured bouncing balls is more like art than a commercial.

3: Apple HomePod - Anderson. Paak 'Til It's Over'

Spike Jonze directing FKA Twigs dancing through a mind-bending and yet somehow realistic environment. Genuinely beautiful to watch.

2: Cadbury Chocolate - Phil Collins 'In the Air Tonight'

Some ideas are so good because they shouldn't work. Imagine being the person trying to pitch the concept of a gorilla playing the drums to the marketing department of the world's biggest chocolate company. It could only work with a Phil Collins soundtrack.

1: Guinness - Leftfield 'Phat Planet'

Leading to the year 2000, Leftfield wanted their second studio album to feel like the end of a millennium. The first time anyone heard a note from 'Rhythm And Stealth' was this moment – the filtered thuds of 'Phat Planet' over this astonishing advert.
