With a reputation built on the live circuit, psychedelic-electronic act Nocturnal Tapes have one of the most dynamic and pummelling shows going around at the moment.
The northern NSW duo released an EP, 'Visions IV', last August and will be part of the line-up for AAA Backstage's Brisbane birthday party later this month, which will be headlined by The Presets' K.I.M.
Ahead of the show, the guys share 5 mixing tips for your next studio project.
1. A common misconception is that you need expensive monitors to mix on.
But the truth is that you need to mix on the worst speakers possible, because if you can get your mix to sound good on them then it will sound amazing on expensive speakers. We mix most of our music on a speaker that we pulled out of a Nokia phone from 2007.2. Your ears are your number-one tool for mixing, so make sure they are clean before every mixing session.
You can use a syringe to irrigate your ears or can use an earwax softener, easily removed with a damp cloth.3. Always have a pet in the room, as animals are renowned for removing bad juju from long, studio sessions.
The only exception are goldfish, which you should never attempt to bring into a session as they emit a powerful aura that could cause early symptoms of writer's block or worse, a full-blown creative shutdown.4. Never listen to other people’s opinion on your mix as they will cloud your judgement.
Trust your ears, you know best.5. Never let your mum listen until it’s finished...
As she will always tell you it's perfect.Nocturnal Tapes Live Dates
