Sydney trio Planet Vegeta have been chipping away at their debut offering since debuting earlier this year.
From hip hop, electric soul, R&B and indie, one thing remains consistent, their foundation of brotherhood and shared love for old-school sounds and new.
The trio now go straight for the jugular, with debut single ‘Jorja’. “We all have different influences, how we’ve grown up and who we listen to,” Planet Vegeta says.
“Everyone has their own unique taste in music. We all come from different musical backgrounds and I think that’s what makes us unique; you can hear it in our music.”
Here, the trio share some of their major creative influences.
1: Dragon Ball Z
With our name being Planet Vegeta, it's a reference from the cartoon 'Dragon Ball Z': the main characters Goku and Vegeta are Super Saiyans. Being a Super Saiyan in 'Dragon Ball' represents being on another level to everyone in the universe. All Saiyans are from Planet Vegeta and so that's what we like to see ourselves as – Super Saiyans.
2: Multi-genre artists like Pharrell and MJ
Even though they are labelled as hip hop or whatever artists, they don't really belong in any genre or era, and that's how we hear our sound. You can't really put us in any category and like them, we would put our music in its own section. Timeless.
3: Street fashion
Anyone who knows us personally would say we're as obsessed with our get-up as much as our music. Op shop and kicks are the keys to life.
4: Food
Don't have to say much about food lol, apart from music and food bring us together. Every time we link up, there's food involved whether we like it or not, it's just there. It's no type of food in particular; if it's on a plate with Best Foods mayo we're eating it lol.
5: Polynesian culture
Being of Polynesian decent, we take pride in who we are. A lot of our characteristics and everything we stand for comes from growing up in an island-family environment. It's massive we represent our small islands and culture on the world stage. Ultimately, we're inspired by our people and at the same time hopefully we can be an inspiration for them also.
'Jorja' is available now.
