5 Local Australian Artists You Don't Know But Should Shared By Jazzparty

Jazzparty are a jazz-soul band from Melbourne.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A big band, dirty beatnik rock & roll group specialising in jazz, soul and grooves, Melbourne's Jazzparty will get you jiving, swinging, bebopping and high-stepping anytime they enter the stage.

Set to play Blues On Broadbeach (Gold Coast) this weekend, the Melbourne eight-piece ensemble have released two studio albums: 2017's 'Monday Night' and 2021's 'Nobody Gets Away'.

Here, singer Loretta shares five local acts you should add to your next playlist/ impress your friends at your next house party.

"I was going to put Emma Donovan on this list, but as she's playing at Blues On Broadbeach [Friday 19 May] you’re bloody well going to know her! DO NOT MISS HER!"

1: Laneous AKA Lachlan Mitchell

One of the most talented people I have had the pleasure of knowing and the luck to work with. I would call him a musical genius. His record from 2019, 'Monstera Deliciosa', is one of the best records to be released by an Australian artist.

Definitely one of my favourite songwriters: sensitive, honest, and deep but really cheeky; always has the best sense of humour in his lyrics. Also really danceable! It's world-class music and I can't quite figure out why he isn't famous.

2: Tracey Miller

One of the most natural R&B blues singers. She feels it so you feel it. It's simple. It's special. She's my mum SO I may be biased.

She has such a deep connection to music and a really eclectic taste and that comes through when you hear her sing. She has one single out on Spotify (but an album on the way) that was arranged by Harry Angus.

It's honestly one of the finest old-school-sounding soul tunes I have heard by a modern artist. If you like The Teskey Brothers and Sharon Jones you should be listening to Tracey Miller too.

3: Ruby Jones

A little bit of psychedelic rock & roll, lots of pop, mood, and alternative dreamy dark goodness. Catchy and deep.

Ruby has a voice like a velvet river and the arrangements are complex and beautiful without distracting from the tunes. One of my favourite bands to listen to while I drive my car. They're working on a second record and you need to get to know them before it comes out. Also should be famous.

4: BUGHUNT

BUGHUNT are a five-piece anxiety-punk outfit from Melbourne who have a tape launch coming up soon. They make what the lead singer and composer Conor Greenway describes as 'ugly music', but the humour and creativity in it is so refreshing to me and once again I'm drawn to honest/ quirky songwriting. His stage presence is phenomenal.

There are two incredible women in the band and I'm loving seeing bands that are playing what you may be used to thinking of as masculine music with amazing women involved. If you like Amyl & The Sniffers you might dig the Bugs.

5: Don't Thank Me Spank Me

DTMSM are a Melbourne-based duo that makes sexy, flirty, soul-tinged pop. They have one track they play live that's so bass heavy and feels like an old hip-banger – super fun to dance to. It's called 'You're Cute' I think and I can't wait for it to come out – wish I wrote it. Their influences for this project range from Destiny's Child to Hall & Oates. Listen now!

Jazzparty play two sets at Blues On Broadbeach: Kurrawa Park Stage 20 May (3.30pm) and Victoria Park Stage 21 May (2.15pm). Blues On Broadbeach (Gold Coast) takes place 18-21 May.
