After a massive 2022 – that saw them showcase at BIGSOUND, nominated for Unearthed Artist Of The Year, and nab a set at Falls Festival in Freo – Perth's South Summit are locking in an even bigger year in 2023, which commences with release of their sophomore EP 'Creatures'.
Loaded with three previous singles: 'Promise Me', 'Tired Of Waiting' and 'Runaway'; the EP features three new cuts including focus track 'Changes', which finds frontman Isaiah Reuben diving into personal turmoil."'Changes' refers to these songs being their own sound and their own creature. The EP itself is a collection of all these songs we’ve been making as individual pieces, into one body of work," South Summit says.
"It's a token of appreciation to the fans who have supported us through a huge year, a release that defines the last year of our journey as a band.
"Going from a local band in the Perth scene to growing to find some recognition nationally, we'd like to thank all of those who helped us get there."
With a national run of headline shows and festival appearances upcoming throughout March and April, here South Summit reflect on their 2022 with a few lessons learnt along the way. "2022 has been a fantastic breakout year for us," shares South Summit.
"We have a great team of people who work behind the scenes to help us achieve our goals, but most of all we want to thank the fans for coming along to gigs, buying merch and listening to our music. Without them we wouldn't be on this journey.
"Being in a band with our mates, and writing and playing music is a dream we have all had since we were young.
"Even though we like to think we know a lot about music and being in a band, we realise every day that there are so many things to learn. Here are a few things that in reflection, we have learnt in 2022 and would like to pass on."
1: Appreciate and reflect on the progress and dedication from your band & behind the scenes team
Take the time to appreciate and reflect on the progress and dedication from yourself, your band and the people behind the scenes, it's no easy task. It's very easy to get caught up in the busy schedule, the gigs, interviews, travel, rehearsing and recording. There's always something to do that's urgent and it's easy to lose sight of the great things that happen.
2: You will get sick of hearing your songs when recording, push through
By the time we record a song or perform it at a gig, we have probably heard it 100 times. But for the crowd it might be the first time. You have to learn to love the songs in a bit of a different way, so that every time you play them you can bring all the passion and excitement you had when you first played the song.
3: Any PR is good PR
A couple of years ago when the band started we knew we had to get our music out there so people could find it and listen to it, but we never realised just how much PR we had to do.We felt a little self-conscious about putting ourselves out there. But over the last two years we have realised that to achieve your goals you have to share a piece of yourself.
4: Keep variety in your songs by getting inspiration from many genres, it broadens your fanbase
It might be different for other bands, but we like to have songs that are different from each other, sometimes a bit slower and sometimes from different genres. We like lots of different types of music, so we decided early on that we would play what we liked and not just what others thought would please the crowds.
5: Keep it fun
Sometimes we'll just have some band time to play pool, go go-karting or have a bevy at the pub to make sure it's not always about business! We spend a lot of time together, so we always make sure that we have time to relax and have a bit of fun. It reminds us all that we are mates and we love what we do.South Summit 2023 Tour Dates
