Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Jenn Barrett & The Night Shift are an Adelaide, six-piece art folk/ progressive rock band with a touch of '80s edge and a twist of sophistication.

Songwriter Jenn imbues emotive lyrics with atmospheric melodies. Romantic and theatrical, the Night Shift offer up a pop/ prog-rock experience that will leave you curious for more.

If you're over footy (till next season that is), then give the AFL Grand Final a miss and head along to Wheatsheaf Hotel's 'And The Big Girls Fly' event that Jenn Barrett & The Night Shift headline (alongside Meena de Silva and Courtney Robb). Before the first bounce, Jenn shares 5 local places that inspire her.

1: Lady Bay – Normanville, SA

Strange and comforting at the same time; a pebbled beach, with a parallel road that has the beach on one side and surreal Bald Hills on the other. It’s really just a thoroughfare through to Second Valley or Cape Jervis, so it's almost always empty. I’ve claimed it as my own.

2: The lake at Piccadilly Botanic Gardens

The lake has a wonderful effect of sparkling in the sunlight. As a child, I thought it was the opening of a Disney movie. A cheeky black swan is usually on the lake when I visit, and the lake still sparkles.

3: Adelaide-Himeji Garden

Simple, peaceful. You’ll find meditators seeking solace from the city, lovers gazing into each other's eyes and garden nuts in this little oasis, which is all part of its glorious atmosphere.

4: The quarries in the Adelaide Foothills

Dotted around the hill faces of Adelaide, are old quartzite quarries. They say the whole of the Adelaide Hills are made of quartz crystal. The quartz crystals are long gone from the quarry sites, but I know there are more brewing in ‘dem hills making their way to the surface in unlikely times and places. My favourite quarry is the small one behind where I live, which has recently been closed to the public due to it being deemed 'un-safe'.

5: Wheatsheaf Hotel

Sometimes inspiration simply comes in the form of a bevy and some great music. The Wheatsheaf is a special pub just out of the city. They’ll be hosting your AFL Alternative event

'And The Big Girls Fly' takes place at Wheatsheaf Hotel (Adelaide) 28 September (2-5pm).
