5 German Soccer Players With Shannon Barnett Quartet

Shannon Barnett Quartet
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Shannon Barnett (2007 Young Australian Jazz Artist of the Year) is known to Australian audiences through her work with The Vampires, The Black Arm Band, The Bamboos, Andrea Keller, Circus Oz and her own quartet.

In 2011, she relocated to New York City, where she studied at the State University of New York and performed with artists including Darcy James Argueʼs Secret Society, Cyrille Aimeé and Ralph Alessiʼs SIM Big Band.

Since 2014, she has been based in Cologne, Germany, where she performs as a regular member and soloist with the WDR Big Band. She also plays regularly in the vibrant Cologne contemporary jazz scene.

Shannon returns to Brisbane with her Quartet for a show at the JMI Live. We asked her for a Top 5 list... we weren't expecting a list of German soccer players. Schock!

1. Manuel Neuer

Arguably the best German goalkeeper of all time, as well as captain of the national team.

2. Lukas Podolski

So beloved by his original hometown of Cologne, that even when plays against them (for Bayern Münich) they cheer for him.

Lukas Podolski

3. Thomas Müller

One of the most unorthodox national players and a typical Bavarian. Think Oktoberfest.

4. Mats Hummels

A great defender who also happens to be not un-good-looking.

5. Jerome Boateng

Deceptively fast and very accurate with the kicking part. Bonus points for being the only soccer player managed by Jay Z.

The Shannon Barnett Quartet plays JMI Live (Brisbane) 4 November.
