5 Fun Facts About New Zealand Indie Rockers Wet Denim

Wet Denim are an indie rock band from New Zealand.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

An indie rock band from Wellington, emerging New Zealand group Wet Denim have today released their sophomore single 'Free'.

Layered with brightness and sheening with its slickness that intertwines jagged guitar lines and punchy drum moments, the song's theme borrows from singer-guitarist Nick Goodwin's experience of feeling socially isolated from loved ones.

"The lyrics talk about a time when I was feeling very secluded from the people around me both mentally and physically.

"I had just come out of a very short, but intense relationship paired with having a tough time with glandular fever so was spending a lot of time alone."

Now based in Auckland, 'Free' follows the group's debut single 'Another Hit' that was released earlier this year. Wet Denim are Nick, Luca Crampton on guitar, synths and keys with brothers Jack and Joe Ledword on the drums and bass respectively.

"['Free'] really brought us together as a band just over a year ago now," shares Wet Denim.

"'Free' is actually the first song we wrote together. Joe came to the first ever Wet Denim jam with the instrumental demo of 'Free' on a Logic session.

"We all sussed out our individual parts and the chemistry began to flow from there."

Here, Wet Denim share five fun facts about the group.

1: The 'Backseat Buffet'. The band car is known as Henry, the trusty Caldina, which lovingly takes us from practices to studios to gigs. It's a jam-packed old thing with all our gear, but treats us well.

Excess gear that doesn't fit in the boot gets relegated to the 'backseat buffet' aka multiple guitars thrown across Joe and Nick's laps. Keep an eye out for the 'buffet' in the upcoming 'Free' music video.

2: All four members of the band write songs, contributing to all instrumentation, lyrics, and production. This comprises the Wet Denim sound; an expression of our collective identity and experiences.

3: Our rhythm section is oiled up by the denim genes shared between brothers Jack and Joe.

4: Our band name originated from our friend Katie arriving home after being caught in the rain wearing her favourite jeans, sitting down on the couch and exclaiming: "Wet Denim!"

5: Our creative outlets extend further than just music. Both Luca and Jack are practising designers and visual artists. Their skills have been utilised in the majority of our album artwork and media assets to date.
