Alt-rap act Buffy Prescott have just released their latest LP ‘ImMature’.
Touted as 'Beastie Boys meets early Nine Inch Nails', the band name derives from the horror movie trope of 'The Final Girl'. As an analogy, Buffy Prescott has taken on all of the beasts (figurative and literal) and is the last one standing to tell the tale.
‘ImMature’ is a concept album about a new parent re-evaluating everything that was a priority pre-children. With that in mind (and Halloween just around the corner), vocalist Sean analyses who are the most iconic, game-changing Final Girls in horror.
1. Laurie Strode ('Halloween')
Somewhat the archetype for every Final Girl to follow, Laurie is the epitome of how the meek, nervous high school girl is forced to uncover her inner-strength. Channeling maternal instincts, Laurie must protect the children she’s babysitting, battling the relentless brutality of Michael Myers. And with a direct sequel set 40 years after that fateful night opening this Halloween, Laurie is set to destroy the idea that Final Girls can only be youthful.
2. Erin Harson ('You’re Next')
This intense Australian (yay!) survivalist never misses a beat. What makes Erin unique is at no stage does she appear afraid or not in control of the threats that are surrounding her.Trying to blend ‘normal’ and turn her back on her ‘prepper’ upbringing, Erin has to source the intelligence and resourcefulness engrained in that very past to survive. She was made for this.
Little Miss Badass herself, Buffy The Vampire Slayer.
3. Buffy Summers ('Buffy The Vampire Slayer')
Buffy was probably the most consistently hardcore bad-ass Final Girl. Less reluctant to accept her role than others on this list, she didn’t just survive one villain in one film, she was surviving everything the Hellmouth of Sunnydale had to offer on a weekly basis. She’s the thing that monsters have nightmares about.
4. Alice Johnson ('A Nightmare On Elm Street')
There are some Final Girls (and boys) that could have easily made this list, but what makes Alice different is how she utilises the power of friendship. Not only does her lucid dreaming put her on even keel with Fred Krueger, but the added ability to absorb the best traits/abilities of friends who have died helps her surpass him. There’s a great analogy there.
The invinvcible Sidney Prescott takes on Ghostface in 'Scream'.
5. Sidney Prescott ('Scream'
Introduced much like Laurie, this timid, virginal high schooler transforms into something much more than any Final Girl that came before. Confronted with, then demolishing and reconstructing all of the horror ‘rules’, Sidney is only ever the victim for a short period. She is easily the smartest and most emotionally mature of Final Girls, and sources that to overcome the incessant traumas that pepper her life. Like the genre’s rival movie monsters, she has proven herself invincible over the course of the series.
