A lo-fi, indie pop band based in Melbourne who've built a solid fan base the last 12 months (that includes supporting Middle Kids), Boysnlove first release of 2022 is the single 'Honeymoon Diver'.
Inspired by a real life tragedy, the song examines loss and longing from an alternative perspective."This song was created after hearing the true story of the death of Tina Watson," Boysnlove's singer Annie-Rose Collis says, "a woman on her honeymoon and 'allegedly' drowned by her new husband.
"The most harrowing part was imagining that moment under water when it dawned on her, not that she was drowning, but that her husband didn't love her.
"It made me think about all those times when I've trusted someone and then they reveal who they really are, and how it's hard not to blame yourself for not seeing them clearly.
"It was inspired by a true story, but I very much drew from my own experiences of betrayal."
For the 'Honeymoon Diver' music video, the group teamed with director Molly Haddon (Sydney Film Festival).
"We love the music video! Annie took the concept to the director Molly, who came up with the idea of flipping the script, and having Annie play out a murder mystery of sorts.
"It isn't entirely clear what happens in the video and you can choose your own adventure/ ending."
Here, Annie-Rose shares five of her favourite crime podcasts including the one that inspired 'Honeymoon Diver'. "A cheery list of podcasts that I will be listening to 24/7."
1: My Favorite Murder
A true crime comedy podcast – sounds a bit juxtaposing, but it is in fact done so well, respectfully and shares stories of incredible people.I love this podcast because it is two women who bring each other some of the wildest stories you've ever heard. They promote good mental well-being, and being open about their own mental struggles; their catchphrase 'Stay Sexy And Don't Get Murdered' probably sums them up perfectly.
2: Something Was Wrong
Often women telling their story of when they knew that something in their relationship was wrong, and is used to educate other women to see the signs of abuse, and really spreads the word of the dangers of dating from online to IRL.
3: Generation Why
This podcast is where I heard the famous story of Tina Watson, which inspired 'Honeymoon Diver'. This podcast is just facts, no fun. This one story really stuck with me, maybe because the diver was in the Great Barrier Reef, but it became my symbol for betrayal, it is harrowing.
4: Criminal
This podcast is everything. It has everything. It has love, adventure, crime, true and honest stories, and it is usually uplifting. If I could only listen to one podcast for the rest of my life it would be this one. And the host has the most soothing voice on the planet.
5: This Is Actually Happening
This one hurts. This podcast is not for the faint-hearted. It is brutal. It's real people sharing their real stories firsthand. I have learnt so much from this podcast. As a therapist myself, I can just listen on and on to other people's stories, and this show gives voice to the bravest people; epic.Boysnlove support Human Noise at Cactus Room (Melbourne) 10 September.
