Earlier this year, veteran Melbourne rock, psych-pop band Even returned with their first album in seven years.
Titled 'Satin Returns', the record features 11 indie-rock gems from the trio of Ashley Naylor, Matthew Cotter and Wally Kempton that were recorded over many sessions in many studios over a handful of years.
Ahead of a run of shows in Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne and Adelaide in September, frontman Ashley shares his love of our leafy friends with his favourite types of trees.
"Trees help us breathe, are used to make guitars and speaker cabinets… three things I can't live without," Ashley says.
"Our song 'Out Of The Woods' refers to being stuck up in a tree! It's always a thrill doing a day-time regional, outdoor festival gig and seeing bushland in the distance. As Tim Finn once sang: 'It never ceases to amaze me.' Take a few moments to notice them in your midst."
1. Wattle
Always impressive when in full swing. Brightens up any suburban street, especially the one I grew up in.2. Jacaranda
I only really began appreciating and noticing this tree after my first visit to Brisbane in 1995. I felt I was in a dream land… purple trees… c'mon!3. Eucalyptus
If it's good enough for koalas then it's good enough for me. Also, these trees are really top Aussie 'n' that.4. Plane
These monstrous beauties create the canopy under which one feels they could be driving through a '60s movie.5. Willow
The English sheep dog of trees. We had one in the backyard of the family home. It was the backdrop of many adventures, sporting and otherwise. Whenever I pass one now I reflect on the grand willow tree I knew and recall its majesty and when required, trimming its fringe so pedestrians on the other side of the fence would not be entangled in its lilting branches.'Satin Returns' is available now.
