To mark the 25th anniversary (last November) of their 'UNIT' album, ('Polyester Girl' is 25!), Regurgitator will perform the record in all its pixelated density, along with an extended set of their hits across time at a special mini festival at Eatons Hill Hotel next week.
They'll be joined together in plasma by a plethora of dynamic musical cohorts they've curated: DZ Deathrays, Custard, Models, Butterfingers, Screamfeeder, Resin Dogs and many more (including Soy Divison) for a full day of live music across two stages with no crossovers. As the presser says: 'Code for rhymes. Products of time.'
A weathered musician from the Rainbow Region of the far north coast of NSW, here Clancy Rocca Robinson has seen the explosion of Regurgitator to frothing fans the last nearly 30 years.
Clancy is currently the singer-guitar player for the band Soy Division. He with the original singer-songwriter Cam Muir formed Soy Division the mid/ late '90s, and after Cam passed away in 2013 form sarcoma cancer, well known drummer Dave Atkins came onboard and breathed new life into Soy Division with Clancy moving from drums to guitar and vocals.
Soy Division
Clancy played drums and guitars in bands on Bundjalung Country in the '90s like Mutation Parlour, DSS, DMT, Diana Anaid, Klang, Ragadoll and many others.
Here, he shares his top five memories and moments regarding Regurgitator.
1: 'Track 1'
When 'Track 1' hit the radio waves it made skateboard mates like Ben White (singer of Lismore band Stiffy with Phil Jamison of Grinners on drums) were suddenly wanting to bust flams on the snare!Quan's lyrical approach was inspiring, delivered with all his rap and metal stylings. The clip had us all going gold chain gangster screaming out: "I'M JUST A SUCKER LIKE YOU!"
2: DSS supporting Gurge
DSS supported Regurgitator at the Tatts in Lismore on Thursday 19th January 1995, and the next night at The Roxy in Brisbane.Ha! I was 17 years old. We swapped a DSS shirt with Benny for a Gurge burger shirt which I still have! I distinctly remember Martin Lee finished the gig and left to go work in his family's bakery at like 2am.
3: Festival Hangs
Regurgitator played a festival in '97 and as I was lugging into the green room when I saw Ben Ely and Martin Lee, and they called us over for a g'ay and a yarn. I was so stoked that they remembered us from years before and were so friendly and cool. I always loved Benny; had mad skate-punk steeze!4: Progression of the Gurge
It was so good to see songs like 'I Sucked A Lot Of Cock', 'Crush The Losers', 'Polyester Girl', or 'Black Bugs' inspiring folks to say I like your old stuff better than your new stuff. Actually making it cool to change musically and keep it fresh.Rad to see Pete Kostic playing drums in Gurge and the addition of Shane on keys. Inspiring to see the progression from songs like 'Couldn't Do It' or 'Pretend Friend' into all the different songs of 'UNIT'.
5: Regurgitator music videos
Man, Gurge have always had such cool clips. Benny's tattoos and Pangaea steeze, Quan just being himself toughing it out with glasses on. All the clips starting from 'I Like It Like That' all the way to 'All Fake Everything'.I love that they are still paying out and making fun of themselves. Quan is a PLATINUM rap god! "Sometimes it sucks to be a rapper, other rappers putting you down. I don't even know who loves me now..."
Regurgitator's '25 Years Of UNIT' mini festival takes place at Eatons Hill Outdoors & Ballroom (Brisbane) 25 March.
