Sarah Blasko is currently revisiting her seminal third album 'As Day Follows Night' with unmissable performances at some of Australia's most beloved theatres.
Released in July 2009, 'As Day Follows Night' represents a high watermark in Australian songwriting. It won the 2009 J Award for Australian Album Of The Year, and also took out the ARIA Award for Female Artist Of The Year. The album, which features favourites such as 'All I Want', 'We Won't Run' and 'Bird On A Wire', went on to achieve platinum certification and was listed at #19 in the book '100 Best Australian Albums', the highest placed record by a female artist.
'As Day Follows Night' officially chalked up its 10th anniversary in 2019 with a deluxe repackage; however, with various COVID-related restrictions and issues talking hold in 2020, Sarah was never able to commemorate the occasion with live shows as she'd originally intended.
In celebration of the milestone, Blasko will perform the album in its entirety – and other favourites from across her illustrious career – at Brisbane's iconic theatre The Tivoli next month. She also has a couple of festival dates as part of Wildflower (Hunter Valley, Mudgee).
Here, Sarah strolls through her local neighbourhood in Newtown (Sydney) sharing a few of her favourite haunts she regularly populates.
Cairo, Enmore Road
A great, relaxed place to eat that serves fantastic Egyptian food. I often daydream about their dishes and can easily satisfy my craving as it's a ten-minute walk from my house. I usually order the charcoal chicken plate and a karkade (a hibiscus iced tea).
Uturn Vintage Recycled Fashion Newtown
It's important to note that there's another one across the road which is called 'Contemporary' but my favourite is the vintage one. It's right next to that beautiful 'I Have A Dream' mural. I nearly always find something I like in there. There's a nice, relaxed vibe too. I hate shops where people try to help you too much, ha ha!
The Courthouse Hotel Newtown
I've enjoyed The Courthouse since I was in my 20s. I'm now in my 40s and often take my son Jerry there for a game of pinball and a drink after he's finished school across the road. It's a very different context these days. I like the neighbourhood feel of the place.
Camperdown Memorial Park
Walking through at sunset on a Sunday afternoon in spring or summer can be a thing of beauty. Newtown has gentrified over the years, but there is still something pretty raw and accepting about the atmosphere of the place.
Enmore Theatre
I've been to plenty of amazing shows here – one that stands out was The Flaming Lips in 2004; it completely blew me away, a life-altering show. One of the most special nights of my life was playing my own show at the Enmore; I think that was probably with my album 'As Day Follows Night' in either 2009 or 2010. The band and I went across the road afterwards and sung karaoke and danced like idiots, we were so proud and happy!
