Emotive 'popcore' rockers NO NO NO NO NO's newest release is the single 'Sharksfin', a single dripping in power-punk potency and furious, intense metal drumming.
Winners of the Heavy Award at the 2020 SAM Awards, NO NO NO NO NO's recent work has also caught the attention of Benji Madden (Good Charlotte) and Eamon Sandwith (The Chats)."'Sharksfin' was written about something horrible that happened to me," begins frontman Luke Shaw.
"I was thinking about how I felt sitting in my car that night with police lights illuminating the rain on the windshield, noticing how the bit of window that neither of the wipers were able to reach looked like a circling shark.
"It was an odd, childlike thought to be having at that specific moment considering the situation I was in."
Ahead of the single launch for 'Sharksfin' later this month in Adelaide, here each member of NO NO NO NO NO share their favourite MTV show... 'cause why not.
1: Dirty Sanchez
Dylan: As a teenager I loved 'Dirty Sanchez', it was like 'Jackass' but way more over the top! I always loved shows, movies and music that pushed the boundaries.I'm not sure if my parents really would have approved of me watching it when I was 13, so I would only watch it while they were out of the house, or in bed, since it usually wouldn't get played until really late at night.
Obviously when I found out there was a movie I HAD to watch it! My friend and I begged his parents to rent it for us since it was rated R and we were only 13. They were pretty hesitant, but eventually relented.
Little did they know that night we'd be watching grown men getting liposuction and drinking the fat afterwards, playing naked paintball, putting their ears in mousetraps, and a guy cutting the tip of his finger off.
'Dirty Sanchez' was definitely not a good influence on young teenage boys such as myself but it sure was entertaining! These days I still watch 'Dirty Sanchez' star, Mathew Pritchard's YouTube videos, but these days he's climbing mountains and running marathons, not smashing lightbulbs on his friends' heads.
2: Beavis and Butt-head
Hayden: My brother and I started learning to play our instruments quite young and of course being kids we were always watching cartoons. When we caught wind of a cartoon show that played our favourite music videos we had to get any glimpse of it we could.MTV was the only channel that aired it and at the time it was on fairly late at night. I remember practically begging my parents to let me stay up past my bedtime to watch it on school nights.
Any glimpse of Metallica's 'Enter Sandman' with commentary poking fun at the random old guy in their music video is what I was after. That and to see what antics they got involved in to be deemed 'cool' or 'bad-ass'.
As much of a laugh as it was, I knew that if my life was anything but what these two characters lived I was doing alright. I guess this is where my thirst for beer and hunger for tacos was born though.
3: Viva La Bam
Declan: I don't watch a lot of TV, but I've easily seen every episode of 'Viva La Bam' at LEAST 15 times each. You may say it's juvenile, low brow, unsophisticated humour, but look a little beneath the surface and you'll see this show is comedy gold from start to finish. Contrary to the name, Brandon DiCamillo is really the star of this show, but every member of the cast has amazing working chemistry that makes it so enjoyable.
Aside from that, 'Viva La Bam' set the bar for modern reality TV; without 'Viva La Bam', there'd be no 'Keeping Up With The Kardashians', and is a world without KUWTK one worth living in? Absolutely not.
4: MTV Cribs
Luke: In hindsight, 'MTV Cribs' was detrimental to a young musician like myself. It filled my head with visions of grandeur and dreams of fridges full or Cristal.By writing three-chord pop-punk songs I too thought I could have a garage packed with Cadillacs like Travis Barker, or a shelf full of BET hip hop awards like Snoop.
The rumination of a childhood raised on 'MTV Cribs' lies festered resentment and frustration in this young guitarist.
I was angry at the world, angry at society for not buying millions of copies of my CD or filling out stadiums for me to play in. Angry at my lack of villa in Southern California. This all culminated in me spending my early 20s incarcerated.
It's a shameful story, but a cautionary tale that I think needs to be told (and now can since the NDA has lapsed). An attempt to break into Criss Angel's Las Vegas home for selfies in front of his gold fireplace and giant Jesus painting in 2009 resulted in me spending my youth in prison.
Things could have been worse, but Criss agreed to lessen the charges if I kept my mouth shut about what I saw in his basement (hint hint: he might be able to survive underwater for 24 hours, but he can't magic himself a full head of natural hair).
Alas, this life of crime all stems back to 'MTV Cribs'. Fully rehabilitated I have returned to pursuing a career in music, which has left me living in a garbage-filled hovel like Redman with my cousin crashing on the couch. I'm putting it in my top 5 because I still believe I can have my own episode one day.
5: Pimp My Ride
Hayden: I always dreamed of the day Xzibit would knock on my door, start dissing my car then tell me he and the boys at West Coast Customs were going to deck it out. There were definitely some wild ideas on that show: gaming consoles throughout the car, art tabs in the back to draw up wherever the driver was, and I'm pretty sure there was even skate ramps that retracted into the boot.
For me though, I'd want an electric drum kit to fold out of the boot. Either that or drum pads dispersed throughout the car to make beats while I drive.
Luke: Xzibit beat me up when he was on tour in Australia a few years ago and I was really insulted cos I bought three seasons of 'Pimp My Ride' on DVD from Cash Converters for $2 each and used to watch it before I went to bed every night; it has tremendous rewatch value.
I have a weird fascination with contestants on old TV shows; one of my favourite things to do is look them up on Facebook and see how their lives have gone downhill since they were on the second season of 'Big Brother', or failed miserably on 'Australian Idol' in 2007.
One time I got Hotdogs phone number and called him and we talked about 'Pimp My Ride'.
Dylan: I used to watch 'Pimp My Ride' so often, every time my sister would come into the lounge room and it was on she would complain: "Why are you watching this episode again, you've seen it a hundred times!?"
I couldn't help it though. Those hideous, ridiculous car modifications that no one in their right mind would ever want were a thing of childhood dreams! Who doesn't want a pool table with built-in stabilisers in the back of their ute?
I would play the PS2 game all the time too at my friend's house, and we loved it. The moral of the story is kids are idiots and that game sucked.
Declan: I really like Xzibit. He is really cool. When I grow up I want to be just like him pimping rides every day.
My cousin's mum's boyfriend told me that the show is fake and that no one's life is as bad, as the people on the show are all actors. I hope that's not true but if it is, Xzibit you have lost all my respect but for now I still love you.
NO NO NO NO NO launch 'Sharksfin' at Low Life Basement Bar (Adelaide) 19 November. NO NO NO NO NO also play Port Pirie Punk Show 3 at Phoenix Park (Adelaide) 20 November.
