5 Favourite Gigs Danny From SIG SALI Has Experienced Live

SIG SALI are an electronic-pop duo from Sydney.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

An electronic, alt-pop duo from Sydney, SIG SALI is the brainchild of multi-instrumentalist Danny Pugh, who is joined by vocalist Imogen Chapman.

Since emerging in 2022, SIG SALI have released two singles, 'Stay Tonight' and 'Reasons', showcasing their brand of blissful, glossy dance beats and soaring, heavenly vocals.

Their newest release is another single, 'Pillow Thoughts'. Out today, it's a stylish, popping, sultry slice of dance pop featuring Dande and The Lion's Natassa Zoë (who also happens to be Danny's sister).

"The drum pattern came first and I fell in love with the energy it carried," shares Danny. "Tass (Natassa) disappeared for an hour before returning with the lyrics.

"I remember all three of us were sitting in a room and Imogen wasn't having the best of days, so Tass told her to 'just go scream every bit of emotion you feel down the mic'.

"That vocal take was so perfect with the synths, like two friends catapulting into a euphoric free-fall."

Guitarist, vocalist and songwriter for Dande and The Lion, Natassa is also an actor and writer as well as a session guitarist for Hayley Mary.

"'Pillow Thoughts' reflects a push and pull dynamic that can sometimes unfold in a relationship." Natassa says. "Danny was visiting me from the UK in Sydney, summer of 2022, and I remember coming home from a run to these really bassy drum beats blasting out of the apartment.

"I picked up my guitar and we put the main hook down. I then went off and wrote the lyrics and came back and we recorded it in my apartment that day."

Here, Danny shares five of his favourite live gigs he's attended.

Fleetwood Mac - Isle of Wight (2015)

It was our last UK festival, and Lindsey Buckingham is the coolest guy on the planet. I've not even picked guitar up since, there's no point.

The Strokes - Sydney (2022)

Talking of cool, The Strokes in Sydney. It was a last-minute thing, and they were at their best. Everything was just on fire, Julian was on form, it was so good. Can't ask for more! You know a good gig when the drummer is like 20 foot above the rest of the band.

Blink-182 - Reading (2014)

Unbelievable. You'll never catch them as they were there. I think that was just before they split, so it was amazing. Banger after banger.

Jon Hopkins - Glastonbury (2019)

I was on my own, 'cause I've got no friends, and I'm glad I was on my own. It was just me and Jon, no one else mattered. The dancers were good, they had lights, they were moving and the pyro. . . Big Jon man, he knows how to put a beat or two together.

The Twang - Bristol (around 2011-2012)

The most underrated band on the planet, and if you know you know. Amazing lyrics, amazing guitar sound. They were the band for me and my mates growing up.

That's all we listened to – word for word, belting out every Friday, Saturday night. Why? Cause they're mint! They played a gig in Bristol and it was so good.

Bonus round; Natassa has also shared her five favourite gigs. "What a tough question, so many gigs to choose from!"

Yeah Yeah Yeahs - Hordern Pavilion, Sydney (2023)

I've seen them a few times, but there was something super powerful in the last show that I watched a few months ago.

Karen O is such a great performer and so irreverent onstage, it's extremely inspirational. The entire band seems to have so much fun and that always makes it way more fun for us on the floor.

Sylvan Esso - Oxford Art Factory, Sydney (2018)

This was the first time I'd watched them, so I didn't really know what to expect and Amelia Meath just blew me away. She had so much energy onstage and her vocals were so powerful.

What I liked most is that they sounded so much more powerful live, which is always a nice surprise.

Bob Dylan - Brixton Academy, UK (2012)

It felt so intimate and raw, and witnessing his complete ownership was incredible to watch.

The Cure - Bestival - Isle of Wight, UK (2011)

Robert Smith is just so weird and awesome, again I think it's the irreverence onstage that I love. The crowd was awesome too, the sun was setting and there were some really good vibes happening.

Interpol - Teatro Saschall, Florence, Italy (2010)

I happened to be in Florence when Interpol were playing and it was incredible. The crowd was awesome and super playful and the band had so much energy.
