5 Favourite Flowers Shared By Keelan Mak

Keelan Mak's new EP is titled 'Brave Face'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Three years removed from his debut EP, Naarm/ Melbourne-based queer alt-pop artist Keelan Mak returns with his sophomore EP 'Brave Face'.

Across five tracks, Keelan explores and expresses diverse feelings from melancholia and enlightenment, as he shares an introspective take on past relationship breakdowns, break-ups, and breakthroughs.

"'Brave Face' is a collection of songs that centre around my life in Sydney, freshly moved in and falling in (then out) of love," Mak says.

"I learnt a lot about myself in the two years I was there. Being a 20-something is the most turbulent experience.

"I feel like every year I'm a completely different person than the last. 'Brave Face' talks about the experiences I've had and the lessons I've learned."

An avid cook, drawing inspiration from his Filipino background, Keelan also loves flowers sharing his favourite blooms with us.

1: Lily Of The Valley

These cuties are found in Europe, which is a shame for me. They have a really sweet scent and are mimicked a lot in perfumes, their shape remind me of little hats.

2: Dendrobium Aphyllum Orchid

This thing rains down like a flower waterfall. Their bloom is also really short lived, so there's a bit of pettiness to it all. You see these a lot in rich people weddings.

3: Common Jasmine

It's more of a vine/ shrub BUT it flowers through spring and summer. You can find this practically everywhere in Melbourne.

It's almost hidden because you spend the majority of winter just seeing vining plants covering every fence and building, and never realise until spring time hits and they turn into this pretty pink and white flower – they also smell beautiful.

4: Carnation

I have memories of picking these in my grandmother's garden as a kid. She bought me a flower press and I would collect all the different colours and press them until they were dried and flat. I would glue them into books and make flower collections.

5: Sea Holly

Sea Holly is like a really pretty prickle. Usually a really vibrant lavender colour that then dries to a dark green/ brown. They will absolutely hurt you if you touch them btw.
