5 Favourite Film Soundtracks According To West Wind

West Wind have recently released a new EP, titled 'Sundown'.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

West Wind are a four-piece band (from the City of Shoalhaven area in NSW) who distil elements of funk and downtempo dance genres into a style of dance music that tastefully balances the acoustic and electronic.

The group began in 2018, with Marc Andrews producing and Mitch Fa'oa on vocals. After the release of their debut album 'Vision Of Her', the band expanded to include Mark Beasley on bass and Zach Lucas on keys.

The band draw inspiration from a wide variety of musicians including Daft Punk, Franc Moody, Winston Surfshirt and Ocean Alley.

After just releasing their four-track EP 'Sundown', here the band share 5 of their favourite movie soundtracks of all time.

1: Almost Famous

'Almost Famous' is almost perfect. It follows William, a teenage virgin who goes on the road with rock stars and groupies as a writer for Rolling Stone.

The soundtrack soothes you though the growing tension built upon egos and popularity until it peaks with a tour bus sing-along of 'Tiny Dancer', which seems for the length of a single song to trump everything else. Like I said, almost perfect. William doesn't get laid.

2: Vanilla Sky

If you're into time-warp mind-f... movies, then 'Vanilla Sky' is for you (if you can forget Tom Cruise's front tooth is aligned with the centre of his head for two hours). It's like an early 2000s 'Inception', only scored by the likes of Radiohead, Sigur Ros, R.E.M. and The Chemical Brothers.

3: Boogie Nights

'Boogie Nights' feels like a non stop disco. . . with porn stars on roller-skates. The opening shot travels through a '70s-era club ending up on Mark Wahlberg, who goes from being Eddie the lonely restaurant dishwasher to prominent porn star Dirk Diggler over the course of the movie.

4: Drive

'Drive' is a hard movie to sell. Ryan Gosling is a good start, but he hardly speaks. It was only on watching it a second time that I realised the music and cinematography work so well together that talking would be an impediment.

If you put it on, once you here 'Nightcall' in the opening scene you should be hooked.

5: Perks Of Being A Wallflower

The soundtrack isn't just background in this movie, it's openly discussed and bonded over, which stands out. Plus, it can be utilised as an extension of your childhood crush on Hermione because Emma Watson is in it.

West Wind play La La La's (Wollongong) 28 February; they'll be joined by Lemon Row, FiKa, General Knowledge Band.
