Melbourne art-pop alchemist Georgia Fields has just released her third album, 'Hiraeth'.
"'Hiraeth' feels like a homecoming," begins Georgia. "These songs have been in my head and heart since the pandemic began, some even earlier."I spent a long time dreaming of this album and realising the sound with my incredible producer Josh [Barber]. . . I listened to a vinyl test pressing last week and I had goosebumps – my whole body was zinging!
"But strangely, I also felt very grounded at the same time. I just get this sense that 'Hiraeth' is arriving at exactly the right time; and I'm ready."
The magnetic singer-songwriter is touring through December, bringing her dynamic, live-looping solo show to Kaurna this weekend before returning to play a couple of regional Victorian shows.
Here, Georgia shares five female and gender non-conforming (GNC) artists inspiring her right now.
Loren Kate
Honest and incredibly moving, Loren's songs are imbued with a rich warmth of heart. She's an exceptional storyteller and performer, and has the kind of voice that can break your heart and then put it back together again.Loren and I are sharing the stage on Saturday 10 December at Three Brothers Arms in Macclesfield, and I can't wait to witness her magic up close.
Jen Cloher
Jen's latest single 'Mana Takatāpui' is infused with a generous wisdom and vulnerability, much like the artist themselves. There's a plain-speaking emotion in Jen's songs that just cuts straight to my core.I have also been massively inspired by their work in building a community of like-minded artists through Milk! Records. In my humble opinion, Jen is a national treasure.
My Cherie
Imagine the lovechild of Stevie Nicks and Billie Eilish. You are getting close to the mysterious, melodic charisma of genre-bending singer-songwriter My Cherie. Her solo show incorporates live loops and vocal effects, so naturally I'm super excited to see her in action (and check out her pedal rig!) at our upcoming gig together: Friday 9 December at Cooee Arthouse, Aldinga Beach. I'm a massive My Cherie fan.
Laura Jean
An emphatically curious artist and exceptional songwriter, Laura has been inspiring me for years and years.Whether she's exploring noir folk (her self-titled record), or smooth synth-pop ('Devotion'), or epic strings-laden indie-rock (her latest album 'Amateurs'), Laura is one of those rare musicians who can reinvent her sound while remaining true to her creative voice. Viva la Jean.
Cookie Baker
Holly Ball aka Cookie Baker is a pint-sized creative force to be reckoned with. Sashaying from alt. country to Americana and folk-pop, Cookie knows her way around a melody. She weaves tunes and stories like a spider with a web.Strong and shimmery, Cookie's songs (and atomic-level onstage charm) will ensnare you. We met while she was living in Melbourne for a few years, and have been mates for over a decade now. I'll be the fan girl up the front at our show on Sunday 11 December at The Wheatsheaf Hotel.
