5 Favourite Australian Surfing Locations Shared By Ash Grunwald

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Currently on the road for a run of east-coast shows that include festival appearances at AIRWAVES and Bluesfest, Australian folk-roots-blues troubadour Ash Grunwald has another tour already planned.

Last year, Ash teamed with soul-blues singer-songwriter Josh Teskey (frontman of The Teskey Brothers) to record an eight-track album, 'Push The Blues Away'.

A project that was recorded entirely live and straight to tape, their only percussion consisting of gospel-inspired hand claps and stomps.

Ahead of the shows, Ash shares his love of surfing by listing a few of his favourite places to dip his board in the ocean.

"On the road I've been able to surf some amazing spots and there's been some places I've always been able to come back to. So this is my top 5 surfing spots."

1: Margaret River Main Break, WA

It's a beautiful, powerful left hander with some right-hand options, and also lots of waves in the area which are always big and powerful. I always love playing in the SW of WA.

2: Bells Beach, VIC

Always LOVE playing down in Torquay and surfing Bells and Winki – it's a very at-home feeling for me. I used to live there for seven years and I love those big, powerful, open waves.

3: The Pass, Byron Bay

Classic longboard wave, but a really good, hollow, dreamy barrel on its day on a shortboard too; and Byron is still paradise – even thought it's so crowded these days.

4: Burleigh Heads, QLD

Beautiful right hand, barrelling point break, but does get very crowded. Last time I was playing at Miami Marketta I got to slip into a couple of three footers and it's really exciting to surf Burleigh. It has so much history in surfing.

5: Angourie, NSW

Down near Yamba it was immortalised in the 1972 movie 'Morning Of The Earth'. Just a beautiful point break; I don't really get to surf many right hand, reef points breaks any more. I don't get down there as much as I'd love to, but it's so special.

BONUS - Byron Shire Region

My final one is a region, which is my home region. I'm in the Byron Shire, but I'm 20 minutes north near Brunswick Heads.

From Byron right up to the Gold Coast, all of the beaches inner westerly that are offshore is hundreds of kilometres of beautiful water, dolphins and living the dream. I had a great surf on the beach this morning – the water was perfect and not too crowded after all these years.
