5 Favourite '80s Synth Lines With Datarock

Datarock
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Datarock first won the hearts of Australian audiences back in 2005 with their '80s-inspired, indie-electro hit 'Computer Camp Love'.

The song came in at #13 in triple j's Hottest 100 and the band proceeded to hit our shores sporting their iconic red tracksuits, playing all the major festivals.

In the years since, the Norwegian band have continued to build a large following for their cross-over party music and international indie bangers like 'Fa Fa Fa'.

Ahead of the release of their new album, Datarock's Fredrik Saroea shares his favourite 1980s synth lines.

1. Talking Heads - 'This Must Be The Place (Naive Melody)'

So simple, yet so ingenious. Just bend that pitch modulation wheel, David!

2. The Cure - 'Close To Me'

So simple, yet so ingenious we had to steal/ borrow it.

3. Devo - 'Big Mess'

I love how Mark Mothersbaugh took his weird approach to synth and arrangements to become one of the most used score composers in Hollywood.

And funny how much 'Big Mess' from our favourite weirdoes sounds so much like Depeche Mode's 'New Life' and other hits from the '80s.

4. New Order - 'Blue Monday'

Not only the various melodic synth lines, but the bass, and of course the bass drum that we stole elements from for our 'Laugh In The Face Of Darkness' intro.

5. A-ha - 'Take On Me'

'Cause they're from Norway and the synth is so incredibly iconic.

Datarock's 'Face The Brutality' is released 9 March.
