Earlier this month, NZ singer-songwriter Jamie McDell released her second, independent album titled 'Extraordinary Girl'.
The NZ country, folk musician travelled to Nashville where she recorded with Australian award-winner producer Nash Chambers. The record features a hearty cast of country music legends including Kasey Chambers, Bill Chambers and Tami Neilson.
"Nashville was me getting out of my comfort zone and finding my way back to it. I like to write songs quickly and alone and quite frankly when I feel like it, and I think being away from home helped me get back to that headspace," Jamie says.
"The listener is getting a sincerely true collection of stories that haven't been tampered with since they were written. They are exactly what I felt like saying/ singing at the time: raw, unpolished and deeply honest."
Currently on tour with Busby Marou (which wraps up this week with shows in Brisbane, Sunshine Coast and Toowoomba), Jamie lists 5 extraordinary women in her life.
Isabelle McDell (my Mum)
She's a bit of a free spirit, definitely adventurous and always tells me like it is. I think I got my creativity from her; she makes wedding dresses for a living, even made her own.Kasey Chambers
Kasey has made her own road. She is such an authentic, genuine artist who feels so deeply and is brave enough to share her deepest, darkest with us. In person, funnily enough, she's like that protective older sister I never had, making sure you get home safely.Click here to read our recent interview with Kasey.
Cass Basil (my bass player)
I have had the pleasure of playing with Cass for quite a few years now. She is the most kind, peaceful soul and has really inspired me to stand up for myself and hold true to my values as a woman in this industry.Shania Twain
I mean she's not exactly 'in my life', well not in person anyways. But I just think she's incredible. She's had more than enough traumatic events take place in her life, yet she still handles herself with grace and works to the highest of standards. And 'Honey I'm Home': what a feminist anthem for country music in the '90s.Tessa McDell (my sister)
Man, she has had some challenges thrown her way. More than most 22-year-olds would be dealing with, but she is the strongest woman I know. Her resilience inspires me, she always gets back on the horse - literally, she is a horse rider.Jamie McDell Tour Dates with Busby Marou
