5 Dance Moves With Songwriter Shanon Watkins

Shanon Watkins
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

From the outskirts of Brisbane, Shanon Watkins songs are known to blur the lines between folk, rock, country, reggae and blues.

Shanon’s new single, 'Secret Love Of Tay Tay', is an upbeat, insanely melodic tribute to this formerly undisclosed appreciation for ‘Tay Tay’ as he so affectionately refers to Taylor Swift.

"'Secret Love of Tay Tay' was mostly written in my car while driving in heavy traffic, banging on the steering wheel in frustration," Shanon says.

"I was listening to a Taylor Swift song on the radio and was singing along not fully conscious that I was actually enjoying it. It happened again at a later date; I was enjoying another of her songs and discovered it was her via Shazam.

"At first I was embarrassed but now I’m not afraid to admit that I like some of her songs. For better or worse, my appreciation of Tay Tay is coming out in the open."

'Secret Love Of Tay Tay' is second track from Shanon's forthcoming album. "Filming 'Secret Love Of Tay Tay' was a blast with Freddy from Smokehouse Productions at the helm," Shanon says.

"I don't know how Smokehouse put this all together because we were all in front of a green screen for about 95 per cent of the clip and they chopped it all together like champions!"

Ahead of a trio of SE QLD shows, Shanon shares his 5 favourite dance moves. You better start practicing.

1. White socks up high-kick

Now this move isn't for the new kid on the block. It's for the advanced entertainer like me and Michael Jackson, maybe George Michael. Practice makes perfect.

2. The sprinkler

Classic move for a stage with a crowd, but not so good if nobody comes to ya gig. Easy to master, hard to look cool doin' it.

3. Thrusta

This one takes me back. 'The Thrusta' is all in the hips and concentration and timing. If you can nail that you will master this move. I should add: pick ya audiences for this move.

4. Robot

This one is not an easy move. I would recommend practicing in front of a mirror or in front of friend who has been drinking a lot. Honesty is the best.

5. Running Man

One of my favourite dance moves of all time. So many variations can be made to this, but I love busting out the old classic; feel that beat and run in one spot. Yehyaaaaaa!

Shanon Watkins plays NightQuarter (Gold Coast) 20 January, Solbar (Sunshine Coast) 2 February and The Bearded Lady (Brisbane) 4 February.
