5 Creative Suggestions For Making Art & Music

The Worm Turns are a band from Brisbane.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A mix of art rock, experimental sludge post-punk and avant-garde noise, Meanjin band The Worm Turns' lyrics and rhythms capture 'the heartache and depth of humanity'.

The close-knit line-up features Michelle Bowden (Gravelrash, Koko Uzi, CTC, Chopper Division) on lead guitar/ cello, Cam Ricketts (IIWII, FAT, Blowhard, AIM, God’s Own Bullet) on drums, Ced Ingra (Chopper Division, CTC, The Dates, Hateman) on bass, and visual artist Kate McCarthy on vocals/ rhythm guitar.

The Worm Turns will be releasing their new digital single 'They'll Take You Out And Thrive', from their forthcoming album 'The Unbreakable Bond' at The Storming Of Banshees Bar  (14 July) during the SPARK Ipswich festival.

They'll be joined in the celebrations by Ben Ely's Mungo Fungo Band, noise merchants iiwii and local legends PORK.

"It will be a night of liberté, égalité, fraternité as we get all SPARKly and (gently) storm the Banshees as the revolutionary crowd stormed the Bastille back in 1789!"

Here Cam with initial points by Kate share a few tips for making art and music.

1: Turn painful experiences into beauty

But don't let the perpetrator know they've had a hand in it. Take it and make marks and notes. Life is hard for everyone on this planet, we all have stories that turn your blood to ice.

I guess we summarise these moments into music and lyrical time stamps. It marks the timeline with stories that either sends us off into an acute or obtuse angle. . . firing us into a new direction to deal with, within this short period of time in this realm.

2: Not looking for 'inspiration' just do it

Looking inward is so much more powerful than looking outward. Always filled with surprise with our jams! It just happens really; we all meet up at Cotton Lodge, eat food, drinks and have a laugh; we are witnesses to each other's ideas as they unfurl.

Then it's just a matter of throwing your interpretation of that idea onto that bonfire, then it all comes together. It's always a surprise to each of us on the outcomes.

3: Deadlines are the most important thing for a creative person

Otherwise, you'd never finish; so many jobs! Life is busy and tedious; completing something that provides happiness and elation is where it's at.

4: Learn to omit parts that don't work

Don't hold onto favourite bits if they don't fit. When you look at any kind of art being created, whatever medium that may be, more often than not, the piece is torn down over and over again until the piece talks to you; then you know the piece is ready.

5: Be trustworthy and don't be an arse

Once trust is gone, it's gone forever; don't be one of the perpetrators as mentioned above in list number one. Hard and fast rule applies to so many situations.

So many people hear but don't listen; I guess that's selective hearing. The humans in this band are an amazing bunch and we all get it; the outcome is inspiration of everyone's talent. . . the best recipe.

The Worm Turns play The Storming of Banshees Bar 14 July as part of SPARK Ipswich's SPARK After Dark live music programme that runs 7-16 July a various Ipswich venues.
