After sharing the stage with the likes of Perth local heavyweights Koi Child, Mosquito Coast and Timothy Nelson among others, Ruby May has gone from solo act to fronting a seven-piece band.
She is leading a fresh neo-soul vibe, hereby creating a doona of groove covering your mind, your body and most importantly your soul with a wave of funkin' feelings.
Ahead of her showcase performance at WAMFest in November, Ruby shares her love of condiments. “We all love a little bit of somethin’, somethin’ on the side.
"If you know me well enough, you may have been treated to a ‘Mummarubes Deluxe Toastie’, which would’ve no doubt included some deeeeeeeeeeee-licious condiments.
“Condiments are the best thing going since cracked pepper and pink Himalayan salt on your smashed avo on toast in the morning. Let’s delve into the world of condiments.”
1. Kewpi Mayo
Yeah... if you knowwhatimsayin… then you KNOW what I am saying. This is numero uno for a reason.Kewpie is smoother, creamer mayonnaise; it’s made with rice vinegar rather than distilled vinegar and its origin is Japan and has spread across first world nations like a wildfire. Established in 1919, this delicious mayonnaise is what you want to top off almost anything.
2. Hummus
You can’t go wrong with hummus. I have a few favourites and I am one of those ‘if it's hummus it's hummus’ vibers. I would recommend the Obela – Roasted Pine Nut Hummus because… hello, pine nuts?!BUT if you’re also anything like me living pay check to pay check and livin’ that sharehouse life, you might wanna nip down to Spud Shed and grab yourself a 1kg tub of hummus for a ripe price (under $10) thanks to Mr Galati. You can eat it for days AND bathe in it that way (face masks too).
Oh and most hummus’ are vegan.
3. Chutney
Chutneys are where it is at. Slap on a little, slap on a lot. You can do it on the cheap (thanks Coles red tags) or you can spice up your life and delve into 'expens-arama' and treat yoself to chutney Tuesdays.'But help me Ruby, I’ve never had a chutney.’ I will help my child, I will help. Tomato chutney is always great, you can settle with a decent one from Masterfoods. They also do a fab corn relish, which has a real Dijon vibe if you are into it.
Beerenberg do a jaw-droppingly gorgeous caramelised onion chutney. Drooling? If you’re feeling spicy, hit up a mango chutney for your curry.
So I dare you to lather up your toastie next time you're at home and you’ll instantly feel like you’ve paid $16.99 for half a toastie and a coffee in the CBD.
4. Sriacha by Huy Fong (pronounced ‘See-rotch-ah’)
Gimme, gimme, gimme Sriracha. If you’re a coconut gal or guy (someone who does not enjoy spice) I would back away with slight caution, but at the same time encourage you to open up your buds to some zest. This is one is a special hot sauce; it's delicious and gives whatever you are eating the kick it needs. If you LOVE Sriracha you can even get Sriracha cook books (I know, right?!). You can even get Sriracha key chains for those on the go – go snacks. Mmmmmmn go-go snacks.
Fun fact: For about two years I was convinced that in the popular Kendrick Lamar 'DNA' track at about 2:07minutes the lyrics were: ‘Gimme Sriracha, Gimme Sriracha, Gimme Sriacha, Gimme, Gimme Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme, Gimme Sriracha.'
Oh also… vegan too – yay!
5. Special Sauce / Turtle Sauce
I know every restaurant has a ‘special sauce’, but now you can have your own. So you like to get experimental? Let two words collide in your mouth hole. Mix yourself a lil mayonnaise and sweet chili sauce – that’s what I call a special sauce.Alternatively, you can make what I like to call ‘Turtle Sauce’, which is a blend of mayonnaise and soy sauce.
Unsure why I named it ‘Turtle Sauce’ because it is not green and it does not resemble a turtle in the slightest. Alas, this is a gorgeous combination for your dumplings, Asian cuisine or even just ya chippies. Could even add some honey to make a marinade.
Save a turtle – don’t sip this concoction through a plastic straw.
