The follow-up to earlier 2022 single 'Waiting On The World (Won't Work)', Perth's soul-pysch groovers Nectar's latest release, 'Find A New Friend', continues the group's laidback charm that also introduces funk-disco flavours.
A song that came together as the four-piece jammed the chorus during a rehearsal practice session, the themes of 'Find A New Friend' centre around a toxic relationship that naturally ends."As per usual this song started off as a jam; Matt and Jac were just casually jamming the chorus in a rehearsal and it caught Jack and Judah's attention so they proceeded to jam along," the band says.
"Jack then went home and wrote the chords to the verse.
"In contrast to the chorus it is a more laidback, melodic section, something that we enjoyed piecing together as you get a bunch of different feels and moods throughout the song.
"Judah as per usual wrote the lyrics after the whole instrumental was pieced together. This song really did just fall into place."
Adds the band: "'Find A New Friend' is a toxic tale from beginning to end of an obstructive relationship where you realise the only healthy thing to do was move on.
"The story is cohesively told over a bright and euphoric instrumental slowly but surely building up to the climax where the person finally 'moves on' over intense and washy sounds.
"When compared to its content and more satiated counterpart, you can start to see how things can change for the better after you leave an obstructive relationship, and the light that can bloom in your life from that person."
In no particular order, the band list their career highlights so far.
Signing to Tone City Records
This meant so much to us to be working with Sam Ford and establishing our sound with his support. The connections we have made working with Sam has helped us immensely and we are so eager to see where the future takes us.Every launch we have hosted
We are always so invested in putting on a good show/ night for our fans that the lead up to these gigs tends to be stressful and somewhat daunting, in a good way of course. So when the night comes and the support bands begin (who are always incredible) it is an amazing experience to not only be a part of but to have set up.
Going to Leeman to record demo
For one of the long weekends we ventured northwards to a small town by the name of Leeman to our bassist Matt's childhood home; we took all of our instruments and recording gear and smashed out a bunch of demos that will inevitably be refined into songs you will hear one of these days.We also got a bunch of cool footage from the weekend (including Jac blowing out candles on his birthday cake!) that will hopefully see the light of day in the not too distant future.
Also Judah went chef mode and bbq'd a tailor caught out in the treacherous waters by the whole band collectively.
Having guests appear onstage
So far we have had trumpets, keys and backing vocals from some of our amazing friends and siblings – it is always exciting as it brings a new element to the show and gives the audience something new and fresh in the Nectarsphere. We are always looking out to have hip, new appearances at our gigs so if anyone has the contact details of Chuck Norris, DJ Khalid or David Attenborough contact us immediately.
Taking time out to focus on breathing
