5 Awe-inspiring Paintings Selected By Banquet Darling

Banquet Darling is the art rock moniker of Brisbane-based artist Todd Kilby.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

The musical brainchild and moniker of Brisbane-based musician Todd Kilby, Banquet Darling has spent the vast majority of the past decade travelling and performing around the globe as a circus acrobat, musician, director and nightlife provocateur.

Now he's ready to release his debut LP 'Dreamlove Obscura', which he describes as a 'once in a lifetime kaleidoscopic journey of dreams, love and rock & roll'.

Ahead of his Brisbane launch show, here Banquet Darling lists a few awe-inspiring paintings.

1: Gustav Klimt - Judith And The Head Of Holofernes

Its aureate seduction and composed brutality had me transfixed when I first saw it at the Österreichische Galerie Belvedere, while on tour in Vienna.

2.: René Magritte - The Therapist

This painting, as well as many of Magritte's works, inspired the tone colours and sonic layering used on our album 'Dreamlove Obscura'. I had this particular piece out on the coffee table the entire time I was recording the demos.

3: Seven Sisters - Kungkarangkalpa

The energy and life that this piece resonates is powerful beyond words. The vibrations of the room vitalise in its presence.

4: Goya - Witches Sabbath

Opened up new fascinations and worlds of dark mystique.

5: Oskar Kokoschka - Tiger

It's primal. It's raw. It roars.

'Dreamlove Obscura' is available now. Banquet Darling plays The Bearded Lady (Brisbane) 13 May.
