Melbourne punk rockers, Captives have fused together their collective frustrations about Melbourne's sustained lockdown to pen 'Villain'.
With the track recorded at The Alamo studio in Melbourne, produced and mixed by Tyson Fish (Vance Joy, Mammal, Children Collide), and mastered by Forrester Savell (Karnivool, Cog, Shihad), fans of DZ Deathrays, Clowns, and Karnivool will enjoy the vicious, ruthless intensity of 'Villain'."This track was sitting around for a while; it was definitely one of the first ones that got put down in the demo process," singer Aaron Damon says.
"I'm pretty sure it began with a bit of a boozy night (no doubt) over at Tommy's place pre-pandemic times.
"Tom wrote the lyrics and I just got the pleasure of singing it, so it was a bit like doing karaoke for me but it's a killer tune.
"In the studio Tyson (producer) added the Greta Thunberg sample at the start and middle of the track, and now when I hear the song it's definitely got some kind of an environmental theme about it, but I'm not sure that's what the song was even about in the first place, haha."
The 'Villain' video was created by a couple of Captives creative mates. "Alex Hingston (artwork) and Dave Hunter (video/ animator) did an amazing job to pull the video together," the band's drummer, Matthew Damon says.
"We've never done a lyric video before, but I feel like it's got a bit more to offer than just your standard lyric video."
Ahead of the band's first tour in two years, they share their bucket list of Aussie venues they want to play before their time is up.
1: Forum Melbourne
What an iconic venue. It has some sick-looking gargoyle statues hanging on the side of building architecture and we've seen some of our favourite bands here.2: The Riverstage (Brisbane)
This place is epic. We got to see Billy Idol play here a few years back. Walking through the Botanical gardens and catching a water taxi down to the venue is an amazing experience.3: Sidney Myer Music Bowl (Melbourne)
Another outdoor venue to add to the list. We've been watching bands perform here for years. If the weather holds out, then even better. Might be the only time that wearing shades onstage is accepted (unless you're Liam Gallagher).4: The Gasometer Hotel (Melbourne)
We've played here a few times now and it might not meet the criteria for 'places we would like to play', but there's a reason we will launch our new album here in 2022. It sounds amazing and the owners are amazing supporters of local Melbourne bands.5: Enmore Theatre (Sydney)
We have to keep some form of state diversity in this list surely?mA ripping old theatre. We've seen a handful of amazing shows here over the years. It would look pretty decent on a tour poster too.Captives 2022 Tour Dates
