5 Artists Matilda Duncan Would Love To Tour With

Matilda Duncan
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and some beyond.

An emerging singer-songwriter based in Melbourne, Matilda Duncan is quickly earning a reputation for relatable, heartfelt, organic indie music.

After a sporadic string of singles between 2019-2022, earlier this year Matilda dropped '10 Seconds Of Silence', a dazzling slice of indie pop that stretches into alternative territory, showcasing her ability to seamlessly blend multiple genres.

With a distinct voice that's unmistakably Aussie, and has been likened to Sarah Blasko, Matilda's newest release is the emotion-laced 'Grocery Store', a break-up song with all the feels and a piano line that will cut you to your soul.

"This one has been a long while in the making and it's the most excited I've been for a release maybe ever πŸ₯°. . . I'm super proud of this song and how it has come to life. Thank you to everyone who listens today and those involved in its creation.

"Since penning the earliest version [of 'Grocery Store'] in 2023 I've only performed it a handful of times (usually when there happens to be a piano handy). I'm really proud of the way this song has grown and evolved into the version that is yours forever now. Happy shopping πŸ«ΆπŸΌπŸ›’."

As Matilda continues to grow her fanbase, here she shares some of the artists who have shaped her own music and would also love to join on tour. Sadly, Matilda may be waiting awhile for Holy Holy who just completed their going on hiatus national tour. :(

Bon Iver

If I got the chance to perform even a single song live with Bon Iver I could die happy. I was lucky enough to see him in 2023 with Gordi as the support and it was pure magic. His audience are so special and attentive, it would be a pleasure to have the ears of such a crowd to perform to. I have always taken inspiration from Bon Iver's albums.

Phoebe Bridgers

Touring with Phoebe seems like it would be cathartic every, single show, and fun backstage. She's such an icon and listening to her music makes me less afraid to try weirder and stranger ideas. I feel like my music exists in a similar world and would enjoy every second of watching and learning from her performance. Plus, getting to tour with one of your biggest musical idols; need I say more?

Gretta Ray

As a teenager being approached by festivals and triple j, it was a bit overwhelming but I found solace and inspiration knowing that Gretta had travelled a very similar path. Gretta's music inspired me from the first listen back in 2016. I've always been drawn to her lyricism and the way she crafts a melody. Plus, she's released covers of two of my favourite songs ever ('Vienna' and 'Re:Stacks'), so we've clearly got the same taste!

Angie McMahon

I like to imagine that we would take lovely walks through all the local parklands on each stop of the tour and have really wholesome backstage pre-show rituals. Angie's also been inspiring me for a long time, and had a particularly prominent influence on my 2020 single 'Out Of Touch'.

Holy Holy

Since seeing the duo live for the first time at the 2019 Groovin The Moo, I've always wanted to join them on tour. Oscar and Tim manage to make a duo or three-piece sound huge and create such a fun, immersive live show for their audience. I'd probably spend the whole tour picking their brains about pedals and gear to be honest; I've always used their guitar sounds as references.
