5 AC/DC Moments With Mark Gable Of The Choirboys

The Choirboys
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A founding member and frontman of iconic, 1980s pub rockers The Choirboys Mark Gable would have seen a lot back in the day, particularly the antics of AC/DC.

Ahead of The Choirboys two shows this weekend (28 & 29 Nov) at the New Globe Theatre where they were play AC/DC’s iconic albums, ‘High Voltage’ and ‘Highway To Hell’ on the respective nights.

Bon Scott’s Briefcase

Bon used to carry a briefcase everywhere on the road. According to the legend the case was for whatever romantic interlude Bon would find himself in on the road. The contents of the said case included: a schoolgirl uniform, several porn mags, and implements for securing Bon’s lovers a deal of pleasure.

The Jack

During the breakdown of ‘The Jack’ when you hear the band chant ‘JACK’ you can also hear someone laughing in the background. This was, yes, a young lady and apparently just a friend of the band who was in the recording studio and having a lot of as well...

Bon’s First Show

Bon had no idea what the lyrics were to songs on his first gig with AC/DC so he made them up on the fly... Not the wholesome lyrics we all hear on the records and radio now, just total filth to the point of being pornographic.

Hey! Can I use your amplifier mate?

I was in a band in the ‘70s and I remember borrowing Malcolm’s amp at a gig (we all used to do this back then). The guitar lead was short and as I did a strut across the stage Malcolm’s amp tried to follow me... Crashhhhh on the stage... All I could see was smoke and these little men trying to clean up the mess.

Don’t mess with Angus’s signature

Alberts Recording Studios, in Sydney’s King Street, were legendary. In studio one, there was a wall that every band that had ever recorded there had signed. Since we were part of the Alberts label and had been there for several years recording demos, when finally we were in process of recording our first album, I felt it was time that I signed this famous wall. I found the largest Texter I could and then proceeded to sign my name across the wall in huge letters (I mean huge), in doing so my autograph encroached on many other pop star and rock star’s signatures including Angus's and Malcolm's and even Bon Scott’s. I was summarily dressed down by the bosses of Albert's for unsportsmanlike behaviour.

Catch The Choirboys playing AC/DC classics at the New Globe Theatre on 28-29 November.
