5 '90s Computer Games That Remind Custard's David McCormack Of Regurgitator Songs

Regurgitator's '25 Years Of UNIT' mini festival takes place at Eatons Hill Outdoors & Ballroom (Brisbane) 25 March.
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

To mark the 25th anniversary (last November) of their 'UNIT' album, ('Polyester Girl' is 25!), Regurgitator will perform the record in all its pixelated density, along with an extended set of their hits across time at a special mini festival at Eatons Hill Hotel next week.

They'll be joined together in plasma by a plethora of dynamic musical cohorts they've curated: DZ Deathrays, Custard, Models, Butterfingers, Screamfeeder, Resin Dogs and many more for a full day of live music across two stages with no crossovers.

Then in May, Regurgitator will tour nationally performing in Hobart, Melbourne, Sydney, Canberra, Adelaide and Perth joined by DZ Deathrays, Custard (except Hobart), Butterfingers and Glitoris. As the presser says: 'Code for rhymes. Products of time.'

Here, Custard's David McCormack shares five Regurgitator songs that remind him of '90s computer games.

Lemmings (1991)

'Lemmings' is a classic video game that was popular in the 1990s, in which the player must guide a group of small creatures through a series of obstacles to safety. The game requires careful planning and strategy, as well as quick reflexes and problem-solving skills.

Regurgitator's song 'Everyday Formula' captures the repetitive and mundane nature of everyday life, where people often feel like they are going through the motions without really thinking about what they are doing.

Similarly, in 'Lemmings' the creatures follow a set routine and often blindly walk into traps without thinking about the consequences. Both the game and the song remind us of the importance of taking a step back and evaluating our actions, rather than simply going through the motions.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert

This reminds me of 'Kong Foo Sing', but I’ve got no idea why.

StarCraft

'StarCraft', a popular real-time strategy game, shares similarities with Regurgitator's song 'Polyester Girl' in terms of their fast-paced and intense nature. Both the game and the song require quick reflexes and a sharp mind to stay on top.

In 'StarCraft', players must manage their resources efficiently, build an army, and outmanoeuvre their opponents. Similarly, 'Polyester Girl''s lyrics are quick and quirky, with the singer trying to keep up with the titular girl's frenzied lifestyle.

Additionally, both 'StarCraft' and 'Polyester Girl' have gained a cult following due to their unique and innovative approaches to their respective mediums, making them standout from their competitors.

Goldeneye 007

Although it may seem unlikely at first glance, there are some similarities between the Nintendo game 'Goldeneye 007' and Regurgitator's 'Blubber Boy'.

For starters, both were popular during the 1990s and have achieved cult status in their respective fields. Additionally, both feature fast-paced action and a sense of frenetic energy that keeps the listener or player engaged.

In the case of 'Goldeneye', this comes from the intense first-person shooter gameplay and immersive storyline. In the case of 'Blubber Boy', it comes from the catchy, punk-inspired music and irreverent lyrics.

Overall, both 'Goldeneye' and 'Blubber Boy' represent the best of their respective genres and continue to captivate fans to this day.

Doom

No Regurgitator songs remind me of this game. It was a mistake.
