360 Has Found His Own Personal Utopia

'Passionate about true crime docos, the Swannies, golf and sleep, I’ve been writing about music for 20-plus years. What I’ve learnt? There’s two types of music – good and bad.’

Over the course of the last 18 months, Australian rapper 360 has undertaken a number of massive lifestyle changes — most notable giving up alcohol.

As well as the ban on grog, Matthew Colwell (that’s 360 guys) has implemented a strenuous gym routine that’s now paying off handsomely. Last month he released ‘Utopia’, the follow-up to his uber-successful ‘Falling & Flying’ record.

Later this month 360 will perform at Splendour In The Grass before headlining his own national tour in September. On the phone for half an hour with ‘60 provided more than enough material for a feature story. Here’s a sampling of our chat.

Eminem Australian 2014 tour

“Doing the Eminem tour was so much fun, it was so good. I didn’t get to meet him or anything like that. He was quite a reclusive guy, which is all good; I totally get that. He’s on another level of famous you know. I got to see Kendrick Lamar and J. Cole live and see how they operate. Watching Kendrick was a learning thing for me man, because I got to see how he works live and he is amazing. That dude is incredible.”

First time onstage after quitting alcohol

“It was amazing man. At first I was really, really, really nervous; the nerves really shone through. But after the first show, the first ten minutes I was fine — I wasn’t nervous again. It was really, really good for me.”

Handling fame

“At the start it really fucked with me man. I suffered from it. I was quite anxious and paranoid about everywhere I went. It annoyed me. It got to me. But that’s because I was doing so many drugs and partying a lot and my mind wasn’t strong. I was quite fragile and not ready for anything. But now I love it dude. I’m really appreciative of everyone who wants a photo; it means I’m kicking goals. When people aren’t asking me for photos, that’s when I need to be worried because then I’m irrelevant.”

Healthier lifestyle

“One thing I’ve really started doing is going to the gym a lot. Going to the gym was a massive thing for me; keeping my head straight and keeping fit, it gives you a natural high. I go to the gym all the time. Another thing is to stay busy; I don’t want to be sitting around all the time. If you’re sitting around with nothing to do all the time that’s when you’re bound to mess up. When you’re keeping yourself occupied and busy that’s when you start flying.”

Splendour In The Grass

“[Splendour In The Grass] is THE classic Australian festival right now. We’ve so many festivals getting cancelled and stopping where they’re out, Splendour is the one that keeps on going and keeps selling out and is the biggest [Australian festival] of the year. They get amazing acts playing, so we’re going to come down and kill that shit. It’s going to be incredible.”

Staying warm in winter

“You gotta have layers upon layers of clothes. I’m a person that really feels the cold; it gets to me. I’ll rock a t-shirt, then I’ll tuck that t-shirt intro my pants or jeans, whatever I’m wearing and that’s the key — you have to tuck your t-shirt into your pants. Then you put on another t-shirt that can hang out the bottom, then you put on a jumper — but you ALWAYS have to tuck the t-shirt into the pants. And if you can, wear longer socks. Long socks is a big deal because your feet are important — that’s how you feel the cold. If you keep your feet warm, your whole body should be warm.”

‘Utopia’ is available now.
