2019 Gold Coast Music Awards Review

San Mei won two Gold Coast Music Awards including Song Of The Year.
Raised free-range on a Darling Downs farm, Pepper has been writing and re-writing and overthinking about lots of topics from her own songs, paraphernalia and bios to rave reviews of John Mayer and sundries since time immemorial. Also: tractors.

Surfers Paradise is a spot generally awash with currency exchange and cultural diversity – during Surfers Paradise Live that’s in both ethnic and musical forms, culminating in the Gold Coast Music Awards (2 May).

People from all nationalities hugged the barriers in front of the free public concert stage on Broadbeach, facing down Cavill Ave. Stars, educators, music industry folk and music appreciators gathered to celebrate and elevate the Gold Coast’s talent.

Local four-piece Peach Fur rode wave after wave of sprightly shoegaze footprints above the sand to kick off proceedings. Both the famous as well as muggles popped up on the red carpet to the side of stage for photos throughout proceedings.

Samantha Morris, Director and Founder of the Gold Coast Music Awards, welcomed all to the official ceremony, which was a San Mei and Amy Shark whitewash.

The Awards have now reach the first enforcement of a particular rule – once an artist wins a category three times, they’re no longer eligible for nomination and are inducted into the Gold Coast Music Awards Hall of Fame.

Amy Shark, currently beginning her national tour from the other side of the country, was announced as the first recipient of that honour, to be officially enacted in 2020.

“I feel so honoured to be recognised by the Gold Coast Music Awards, by my home town and by the community that stood by me from the very beginning,” Amy said by video.

San Mei’s band gently rocked the stage before announcement of the People’s Choice Award, going to looping harp artist ELSKA.

The night ended with burgeoning country rock star (nominated for four GCMAs) Casey Barnes and his gentlemanly ensemble playing familiar tunes of his own including his current single ‘Better Days’ and a certain foot-loosening dance anthem, as well as two brand-new songs.

Backstage before his performance, Casey regaled tales of his recent tour (and exciting industry meetings) in the USA: opening for Lady Antebellum, playing the PBR circuit, the Sprint Centre in Kansas City and his upcoming tour with the Davisson Brothers, before they play Groundwater Country Music Festival at Broadbeach in July.
