2018 WAMFest Live North Perth Review

Carla Geneve was part of WAMFest Live North Perth event staged 28 October, 2018.

This year, WAMFest Live kicked off early with a Sunday, all-ages Live North Perth event (28 October) centred around the Rosemount Hotel, with local acts taking over the main room, Four5Nine Bar and spilling out into the car park.

On the Rosemount outdoor stage, the sunny, warm weather made for perfect Sunday afternoon vibes.

The all-female line-up started with Kaitlin Keegan, followed by Dulcie, Fraeya, Grace Barbe and ended with a scorching set from Carla Geneve; it made for a rich show of sound and lyrics, each artist divinely unique in sound, message and delivery – a small reflection of the superb music being created by women, from around West Australia.

From indie pop to Afrobeat, their performances had the audience swaying and dancing in the sunshine until well after sundown.

Carla Geneve ended the night on the outdoor stage with “a song about being a woman in the music industry” as she explained to a hushed crowd. Delivering a vocally, musically and lyrically powerful performance of music and facts, she sang about the familiar story of the things women experience, relatable to various areas of life.

On the main stage, Hyclass, Marksman Lloyd, Jamilla, Grievous Bodily Calm and Superego blasted and meandered their way through their sets, depending on who was on stage.

From the trippy instrumental sounds of Grievous Bodily Calm with Matthew McGlynn on trumpet at front of stage, to the mash of high voltage yet intricate output of Superego, there was an eclectic vibe of oneness among the crowd.

The walls of the Four5Nine Bar shook as bands such as The Limbs and Black Stone From The Sun took it to another level playing songs from their latest album ‘Dreamalysis’.

Other bands on stage included Bad Friends, Mt Cleverest, Airline Food and Girl York.

In another part of North Perth, at the North Perth Town Hall for all-ages, Flossy, Mal de Mer, Young Robin, Escapist and Phoneline Valentine hit the stage and for the mini music lovers, there was a silent disco in the Milkd alleyway.

WAMFest continues this weekend (2-3 November) with WAMFest Live Friday and Saturday across a dozen venues with more than 100 acts; there’s plenty of local music to check out.
