2016 Record Store Day: Rarities & Re-Issues

Record Store Day 2016 is almost here and the lists of rare and exclusive titles that will be available here in Australia on 16 April rivals the best Santa can offer most Christmases.


The Rocket list features an exclusive David Bowie pressing – the 50th Anniversary release of 'I Dig Everything: The Pye Years'. The six track LP from 1966 compiles the songs Bowie released during his time with the Pye record label, including 'I'm Not Losing Sleep', 'Do Anything You Say' and 'Good Morning Girl'.

BowiePerth singer Fait (otherwise known as Elise Higgins) has re-released her debut EP 'Atmosphere' as part of RSD this year. 'Atmosphere' has been described as a mix of dream pop and instrumental rock, and it's worth checking out before Fait releases her next album, coming soon. The five track EP includes songs 'Slow Glow' and 'Surrender To'.

Bob Dylan's 'Melancholy Mood' EP will be available, featuring four songs from his upcoming album 'Fallen Angels': 'Melancholy Mood', 'All Or Nothing at All', 'Come Rain Or Come Shine', and 'That Old Black Magic'. The EP was originally made for Dylan's Japanese tour, and will be in limited quantities.

'A Few Older Ones/ Doubt' by Twenty One Pilots is a live recording of their show at the Fox Theatre in Oakland, California, as part of their 2015 Blurryface World Tour. Tracks include old favourites 'Pantaloon' and 'Semi-Automatic' as well as 'Doubt', from their latest album 'Blurryface'.

Run The Jewels are doing things a little different for RSD, releasing a virtual reality music video. Fans can purchase customised Run The Jewels cardboard viewers to watch the band's latest video for their song 'Crown' in a whole new way – all they need is a smartphone. Get a 360 view of 'Crown' and a bonus download code for an unreleased Run The Jewels track.

Soul Asylum
The Grammy-winning album 'Grave Dancers Union' by Soul Asylum is back in vinyl for RSD. An exclusive pressing on red and green vinyl, the sound has also been recently remastered. “Grave Dancer's Union' was their breakout album, and it does of course feature their hit song 'Runaway Train'.

For those who like their country music a little alternative, Son Volt have a 2LP out for RSD called 'Live From The Bottom Line', recorded in 1996 at their show in the famous New York music venue. A limited edition on 180 gram black vinyl, 'Live From The Bottom Line' is made up of songs from their debut album 'Trace', including their first major hit 'Drown'.

'Where Are Ü Now' was the debut album of DJ duo Skrillex and Diplo (together known as Jack Ü), and will be available on RSD. The album was released in 2015 and features artists like Justin Bieber (who joined them for the title track 'Where Are Ü Now') and 2 Chainz, in a fusion of dance and trap music.

Not one for the kids, Rob Zombie's releasing a new EP 'Well, Everybody's Fucking In A UFO'. The EP has two tracks from his upcoming album titled 'The Electric Warlock Acid Witch Satan Orgy Celebration Dispenser'. The vinyl artwork is more than a little explicit, and is the cover art for the upcoming album. The two new tracks are: 'Well, Everybody's Fucking In A UFO' and 'Super-Doom-Hex-Gloom Part One'.

Get the late great Biggie in the colour of money. The Notorious B.I.G's 'Mo Money Mo Problems' single EP will be available at participating indie record stores on green vinyl. The five-track EP has four versions of the hit song (two remixes, the radio edit, and the album version) plus one extra track.

Ravi Shankar's 'In Hollywood' from 1971 is a rare, live recording on the list for RSD. The legendary sitar player and Hindustani classical musician recorded this concert for friends at his home in Hollywood (George Harrison was one of those friends).The featured track is 'Parameshwari', a piece composed by Shankar.

For the first time on vinyl for RSD you can get your hands on American blues legend Muddy Waters' 'Hoochie Coochie Man: Live At The Rising Sun Celebrity Jazz Club'. This hard to find recording comes with a download card and booklet, and tracks include 'Baby Please Don't Go' and '(I'm Your) Hoochie Coochie Man'.

Another unique recording up for grabs is Bring Me The Horizon's 'Live From Maida Vale'. Recorded live at London's Maida Vale studios for BBC 1, it features the songs 'Drown', 'Throne', and 'Happy Song'. 'Drown' is an acoustic version with a string quartet brought in for the session.

Surf rock duo Hockey Dad from NSW are releasing their new EP 'So Tired' on RSD, to go along with their 'So Tired Mini Tour'. Two Aussie boys from the coast, Hockey Dad got some attention for their single 'I Need A Woman' from their last EP, and played SXSW last month.

Frank Turner's 'Positive Songs For Negative People' is also out for RSD. The British singer-songwriter is known for his relatable indie folk tunes, and this record is made up of acoustic versions of every song from his album of the same name, including the major single 'The Next Storm'.

Cold Chisel
Dragged deep from the Cold Chisel archives, 'Cold Chisel: The Live Tapes Vol 2: Live At The Bombay Rock' was recorded back in 1979 – a live show at Melbourne's Bombay Rock. Available as a double album for RSD in limited numbers, this was before they ever had a hit record. The original Cold Chisel live experience.

A limited edition re-issue of Madonna's 'Like A Virgin & Other Big Hits' will be available on pink vinyl. Originally released in Japan in the '80s, it was made to promote 'Like A Virgin', but also has 'Holiday', 'Lucky Star' and 'Borderline'.

Ridiculously popular Brit Ed Sheeran will have five different EPs available as part of RSD on black vinyl: 'You Need Me', 'Loose Change', 'Songs I Wrote With Amy' (collaboration with singer-songwriter Amy Wadge), 'Live At The Bedford', and 'No 5 Collaborations'.

Outkast
Get hip hop duo Outkast's single 'Elevators (Me & You)' on glow in the dark green vinyl, with the alien head artwork. Their biggest hit before 'Miss. Jackson', the track was from their second album 'ATLiens'. Features remixes and the original album version.

Wiggles
Start the kids' vinyl collection right (or relive the golden era of the Big Red Car yourself) with 'The Best Of The Wiggles' on vinyl for RSD. 24 classic tracks, as well as rare photos for this 25th Anniversary special edition.

Record Store Day 2016 is held on 16 April at participating record stores around the country.
