Love indie films? Love women? Love indie films made by women? Of course you do.
Sydney's World Of Women (WOW) Film Festival will celebrate 19 years of women's filmmaking excellence next month. It's a diverse showcase of contemporary short films and features with key creative input by women — we're talking fiction, docos, animation and experimental films all dedicated to seeing the world through the eyes of women.
The festival is presented by Women in Film and Television (WIFT) NSW, and runs from March 5 - 15 at Dendy Opera Quays and Parliament House Theatre, Customs House Library, the Australian Film Television Radio School (AFTRS), the Vanguard Newtown, Surry Hills Library and University of Technology Sydney.
Acclaimed producer Liz Watts (Lore, Dead Europe, Animal Kingdom) is the WOW Patron for 2013, while the Minister for Women (NSW), the Hon. Pru Goward, will open the festival at the Dendy Opera Quays on Tuesday March 5. Naturally, it wouldn't be a celebration of women in Australian cinema without Margaret Pomeranz' involvement, so she'll be appearing on opening night and hosting a conversation with a leading local filmmaker at Surry Hills Library on Thursday March 14.
Not entirely coincidentally, International Women's Day falls during the festival on March 8, so WOW will be celebrating with a screening of Show Me The Magic (and a Q&A with director Cathy Henkel) at AFTRS, followed by a retrospective of shorts by female AFRTS alumni curated by director Cate Shortland (Lore, Somersault)
