In what was clearly not a scripted portion of the night, Will Smith has punched Chris Rock in the face during the 2022 Oscars ceremony.
Rock was onstage to present the award for the Best Documentary Feature and was telling some jokes, one of which included saying "looking forward to GI Jane 2" as he gestured at Will's wife Jada Pinkett Smith (who has a shaved head due to alopecia).
Smith then calmly walked on stage, approached Rock appearing to hit him in the face before walking back to his seat where he was heard yelling in an agitated state: "Keep my wife's name out of your f...ing mouth!" not once but twice. Hectic.
A clearly shocked Rock responded: "Wow! Wowww! Will Smith just smacked the sh.t out of me. Wow dude! It was a GI Jane joke." After a pause, Rock continued: "That was the greatest night in television history."
