What Does The Future Hold For Offspring?

We all have a little Nina Proudman in us – a little awkward, off with the fairies, totally chaotic, but utterly lovable.

We fell hard for Asher Keddie when she graced our screens as Nina in the 2010 debut of 'Offspring'. Created by John Edwards along with writer Debra Oswald and producer Imogen Banks, the show has won seven Logie awards as well as countless other honourable acknowledgements. But there is sad news for the Proudman family (WARNING: you'll probably cry harder than when Patrick died).

The Guardian has today reported the beloved Australian drama series has been cancelled after a heart-warming five seasons. According to the report, John Edwards has confirmed that the series would not be returning for a sixth season. "We're very busy with 'Gallipoli' and another secret project... We're developing scripts for 'Party Tricks' and we're well under way with the second series."

offspringThough Channel Ten's chief programming officer, Beverley McGarvey, doesn't want to confirm the dream is over, saying they aren't ruling it out just yet. "We want 'Offspring' to return in 2015. We are in discussions with the producers and they are, in turn, in discussions with the key creatives and cast."

There are a few hints that lead to the realisation that the show could very well cease, regardless of what Channel Ten are saying. The facts are, one: the end of season five seemed to wrap up the series quite nicely with Nina saying to her one-year-old daughter on her birthday: "yes Zoe, this is your family. And it's always going to be like this." Two: the creators seem quite busy with other projects and three: there is the slight problem of money – or lack there of. Apparently once an Australian show has reached 65 episodes, it no longer qualifies for a 'Screen Australia' rebate, this then makes everything 20 percent more expensive.

So the question on everyone's lips is – is there a future for 'Offspring'?
