Scarlett Johansson's Banned Super Bowl Ad
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

A SodaStream ad featuring Scarlett Johansson has been banned from the Superbowl — but not because it's too sexy.

Rather, Superbowl broadcaster Fox reportely killed the ad because they were afraid of reprisals from Coke and Pepsi.

The ad for the do-it-yourself soft drink machine features direct references to Coke and Pepsi. SodaStream CEO Daniel Birnbaum told USA Today that the references made Fox "afraid".

"What are they afraid of?" Birnbaum protested. "Which advertiser in America doesn't mention a competitor? This is the kind of stuff that happens in China. I'm disappointed as an American."

In the ad, Johansson openly wonders how to make the video go viral. We prefer her suggestion (to don a provocative black dress and sip a drink seductively), but the ban has been even more effective — since being added to YouTube this week, the ad has racked up 1.6 million views.
