Now THIS is the Michael Bay we know and love.
Sure, Bay's Transformers films were commercial blockbusters, but Pain And Gain is a return to the spirit (and the irreverent attitude) of early Bay classics like Bad Boys and The Rock. An action comedy starring Mark Wahlberg, Dwayne (The Rock) Johnson and Anthony Mackie, it follows a group of personal trainers in 1990s Miami who, in pursuit of the American dream, get caught up in a criminal enterprise that goes horribly wrong.
Based on a series of Miami New Times articles written by Pete Collins (and compiled in Collins' book, Pain & Gain: This Is A True Story), which detailed the kidnappings, extortions, tortures and murders carried out by a number of bodybuilders affiliated with the Sun Gym, Pain And Gain has a sharp satirical edge, and has been hailed as Bay's "most thought-provoking film to date".
Boasting a cast that also includes Tony Shalhoub, Ed Harris, Rob Corddry, Rebel Wilson, Ken Jeong, Bar Paly, Peter Stormare and Kurt Angle, Pain And Gain will be released in Australia on August 8.
