Our initial misgivings about Tom Cruise's ability to play Jack Reacher — the, er, rather tall ex-military investigator and protagonist of Lee Child's bestselling novels — have been obliterated by this latest trailer.
The film, directed by Christopher McQuarrie (screenwriter of The Usual Suspects, The Way Of The Gun, Valkyrie, Mission: Impossible — Ghost Protocol and the upcoming The Wolverine), is loosely based on the 2005 novel One Shot. When a gunman takes five lives with six shots, all evidence points to the suspect in custody. But on interrogation, the suspect offers up a single note — 'Get Jack Reacher!' — and, naturally, Reacher sees things differently. So begins a chase for the truth, pitting Reacher against an unexpected enemy with a skill for violence and a deadly secret.
Of course, this isn't the first time we've seen Cruise play a badass, but Reacher is on a whole different level to Ethan Hunt. If this trailer is any indication, Cruise has risen to the occasion.
Jack Reacher is in cinemas from January 3 2013.
