Tropfest Goes Outside

Tropfest
Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Just when you thought it was safe to go back inside, it turns out Wollongong isn't quite finished with its outdoor cinema this summer.

This Sunday February 17, the Wollongong Botanic Gardens will host a very special, very one-off broadcast of 2013 Tropfest.

Presented by Sunset Cinema and Destination Wollongong, the event will showcase the best short films from around the country, with local bands on stage from 3pm, roving entertainment, food stalls and plenty of good ol' family fun.

Founded as a screening night in Darlinghurst's Tropicana Café over two decades ago, Tropfest has since become the world's largest short film festival and awards ceremony. From hundreds of entries, all especially created for the festival and all including the Tropfest Signature Item, 16 finalists are selected.

This year, the Tropfest Signature Item is 'Balloon', so to make this screening extra special, there'll be a hot air balloon tethered on site for the evening.

The gates will open, red carpet will roll out and picnic blankets will roll in from 3pm on Sunday February 17.
