Top 5 Loveable, ‘90s Sitcom Characters With Matt Okine

Our eclectic team of writers from around Australia – and a couple beyond – with decades of combined experience and interest in all fields.

Multi award-winning comedian and Triple J Breakfast co-host, Matt Okine returns to the stand-up stage and the comedy festival circuit in 2015 for his fourth, solo show.

Okine’s new show ‘The Other Guy’ follows a year of sold-out shows around the country. Here, Matt shows his love 1990s sitcoms with this list of loveable characters.

1. Steve Urkel (‘Family Matters’)

Has there ever been a more loveable nerd than ‘Family Matters' Steve Urkel? Urkel only made his debut on the predominately African-American casted-show in episode 12 of season 1, which begs the question: How the hell did this show survive 11 episodes without Urkel? The cast must be kissing Urkel's shoes every day once he came on board because it lasted eight more seasons and guaranteed all of them a very healthy TV career. "Did I do that??" Yes, Urkel. You did.

2. Alf

Yo, what even was Alf? Like, I know he was an alien, but he kinda looks more like a cat that had sex with a bear that had sex with a croissant, if the croissant had nostrils. He did pretty well to keep the LOLs up though, given his entire race was wiped out and he'd never be able to go back to his home planet of Melmac. And how Alf's host family managed to keep him a secret for so many years without appearing on some neighbours from hell episode of ‘A Current Affair’ is a wonder.

3. Michelle Tanner (‘Full House’)

Remember before you knew them as Mary-Kate & Ashley, and they were pulling off some ridiculously cute acting in their dual role as Michelle Tanner from ‘Full House’? Did you know they won a Young Artist award for Best Young Actor Under Five Years of Age for that role...? An award! At four-years-old!! What were you doing when you were four-years-old? Probably something stoopid. In fact, I couldn't even read when I was four. I would've just dribbled all over my script and then pooped my pants.

4. Screech (‘Saved By The Bell’)

Boy oh boy. Those googly eyes. That crazy hair. That zany voice! It's like someone made ‘Saved By The Bell's Samuel ‘Screech’ Powers following a recipe from the ‘Archetypal Wacky Sitcom Character Cookbook’. Oh and if you're wondering what our old mate ‘Screech’ is up to these days, you can rest assured knowing that he recently STABBED A GUY!! Yep... That happened.

5. Betty Wilson (‘Hey Dad’)

Remember when Australia made full-on, legit, sitcoms with laugh-track audiences and everything? I miss those days. And I miss most ‘Hey Dad’. Just because one potato in the sack is a little off doesn't mean you should discard the whole lot. And the same goes for the cast of ‘Hey Dad’. There's a few characters from this Aussie sitcom who deserve to be in this spot. Nudge: the larrikin who constantly barged into the home and ate anything and everything from the fridge. Arthur McArthur: the annoying but loveable little kid next door. Or even Ben. The weird, timid friend of the son. But Betty belongs in this spot because she was the only character in the WHOLE history of the show who stayed in the show the whole eight seasons without changing actors... Not even the lead character, Mr Kelly, survived that long! (which, let’s face it, is probably for the best... :/ )
