Discovery Communications — the company behind 'Animal Planet' — has invested in a 24/7 TV channel for dogs.
Discovery has bought an unspecified stake in DogTV, a two-year-old network that broadcasts 24/7 and splits content into three categories: relaxation (New Age music, footage of sleeping dogs), stimulation (chirping birds and wrestling puppies) and exposure (busy intersections, human babies, postal workers and the like).

The channel has a distribution deal with US satellite provider DirecTV, which estimates that half its 20 million customers are dog owners with potential interest in the channel. There will, of course, be substantial difficulties involved in monetising the audience for this sort of content, not the least of which is that THEY ARE DOGS.
Of course, if the channel can get the dogs' owners to watch, too, this crazy idea just might pay off with some advertising. For now, revenue will come from subscriptions, with pet owners charged $5 a month to stare at sleeping dogs on DirecTV and $10 for online streaming.
It'll surely only be a matter of time until we can watch DogTV in Australia. I, for one, welcome our new canine overlords.
